7 Days in Scotland: The Perfect Road Trip Itinerary

This 7-day Scotland itinerary is a self-drive road trip that loops from Edinburgh through the Trossachs, the west coast, the Road to the Isles and the Isle of Skye, then back to the capital via Loch Ness and Highland Perthshire. It is designed for first-time visitors who want to see the icons — lochs, castles, glens and islands — without spending the whole week behind the wheel.

Each day below links to a full stop-by-stop guide with driving distances, timings and what to see. Days 6 and 7 are spent on foot in Edinburgh, and there is an optional two-day Side Trip to Mull & Iona if you can extend the trip.

Planning Your Scotland Road Trip

When to go: May to September gives the longest daylight and the best chance of dry roads, but also the biggest crowds and highest prices. April and October are quieter and still very driveable. In winter, mountain passes such as the Quiraing road can close, so check conditions.

Driving: You will meet single-track roads with passing places in the Highlands and on Skye — pull in to let faster traffic and oncoming cars through. Fuel up whenever you can, as petrol stations are sparse in the north and west.

Ferries: The Mallaig–Armadale crossing on Day 3 and the Oban ferries for the Mull side trip should be booked ahead with CalMac in summer. If a sailing is full, Skye is also reachable by the road bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh.

Where to stay: Book accommodation in Fort William (Day 2) and Portree (Days 3–4) early — both fill up fast in peak season. For the last two nights, a central Edinburgh base lets you explore entirely on foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see Scotland in 7 days?

Yes. Seven days is enough to loop from Edinburgh through the Highlands and Isle of Skye and back, taking in lochs, castles, glens and a Hebridean feel — as long as you accept it is a highlights tour rather than a slow exploration. This itinerary balances driving days with time on foot in Edinburgh at the end.

Do you need a car for this Scotland itinerary?

A car is strongly recommended for Days 1–5, as public transport to places like Glen Coe, Glenfinnan and the Trotternish peninsula is limited. In Edinburgh on Days 6–7 you do not need a car at all — the city is compact and walkable.

Which direction should you drive this route?

This itinerary runs clockwise: west to Oban and Fort William, north to Skye, then back south via Loch Ness. Driving it this way keeps the most scenic coastal roads ahead of you in good light and saves the flat, faster A9 for the return leg.

How many miles is this 7-day Scotland trip?

The core route is roughly 665 miles over five driving days, plus a ferry crossing to Skye. The optional Mull and Iona side trip adds about another 194 miles and two days.
