AI-Assisted Hack Hits Star Wars Galaxies Server Over a 14-Year-Old Feud

An alleged hack of a Star Wars Galaxies community server has turned into one of gaming’s stranger recent stories — part cybersecurity incident, part archaeological dig into a grudge nursed for nearly a decade and a half.

The breach was confirmed in the official Discord of Star Wars Galaxies Legends, the most active community-run emulator of Sony Online Entertainment’s classic MMO, which shut down officially in 2011. According to the announcement, a user known as levarrishawk — a moderator of the game’s subreddit — allegedly used AI-assisted tools to decrypt client-side assets and gain unauthorised access to exclusive content.

What Was Taken — and What Wasn’t

The breach gave the attacker access to in-game items, mission lines, and content exclusive to the Legends server. The files were subsequently shared with other private servers running Star Wars Galaxies emulators — effectively distributing content that the Legends team had developed independently of Sony’s original release.

What wasn’t compromised, the Legends team was careful to clarify, was any personal data or player credentials. This wasn’t an attempt to steal account information or financial details — the target was the game’s own assets.

“The AI has lowered the barrier of entry” for decrypting game files, the incident has prompted observers to note — a pattern that will likely concern developers of other legacy community servers.

A Grudge Fourteen Years in the Making

The alleged motivation is the strangest part. According to levarrishawk’s own account of events, the hack was not about financial gain or malice toward the player community. Instead, it stemmed from a “honeypot” plan allegedly orchestrated around fourteen years ago by individuals who later joined the Legends development team.

The claim is that these developers acquired tools from Sony Online Entertainment — the tools used to build the original game — and declined to share them with other members of the broader Star Wars Galaxies preservation community. That perceived betrayal, apparently, festered for over a decade before reaching this outcome.

AI as a Game-Cracking Tool

Perhaps the most significant angle for the wider industry is not the grudge itself but the method. The use of AI to assist in decrypting game assets represents a meaningful shift in what individual actors can accomplish without deep technical expertise.
