Running at 70–80fps on a flagship PC at 4K Ultra, and a stable 55–60fps on a mid-range Steam Machine at 1440p Medium — those are the numbers that matter. But what makes them remarkable isn’t the performance itself; it’s the fact that Rebel Wolves pulled it off on Unreal Engine 5.
The Blood of Dawnwalker, which launched on September 3, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, is already drawing attention not just for its vampire action-RPG setting but for something far more surprising: it runs well. Properly well. Not in spite of Unreal Engine 5, but on it.
Unreal Engine 5’s Stutter Problem
Unreal Engine 5 has a reputation. Over the past two years, major titles built on Epic’s engine have shipped with significant technical issues — particularly on PC. Star Wars Zero Company launched with crashing and stuttering that affected a wide range of hardware. Halo: Campaign Evolved runs fine on top-end machines but scales poorly to anything below recommended specs. Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake both shipped with stuttering severe enough to make them difficult to enjoy, particularly during scene transitions.
The common thread is Nanite geometry and Lumen lighting, UE5’s two headline features, which demand far more from CPU and VRAM than previous generation engines. Developers have struggled to optimise around them, and players have learned to temper expectations. A promising UE5 game on PC is often followed, a week later, by reports of frame pacing issues on anything outside of a narrow hardware window.
How Dawnwalker Performs on PC
On a high-end system — AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D, RTX 5090, 32GB RAM — The Blood of Dawnwalker delivers 70–80fps at 4K with the Ultra preset and DLSS set to Quality. That’s demanding but expected territory for that hardware.
What’s harder to explain is how it behaves everywhere else. On a Steam Machine running a much weaker CPU and less system memory, the game holds 55–60fps at 1440p on mostly Medium settings. More significantly, there’s no stuttering. Not the background texture-loading hitches. Not the shader compilation freezes. Not the scene-transition lurches that have made other Unreal Engine 5 games frustrating to play. The Blood of Dawnwalker remains stable throughout.
Even on the Steam Machine, which has a much weaker CPU and less memory, I still don’t get the kind of stuttering and crashes that Unreal 5 has become known for on weaker hardware.
The revised PC system requirements tell a similar story. Early hardware guidance from April 2026 pointed toward an RTX 5090 for 4K Ultra gameplay. The final requirements dropped that target to an RTX 4070 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 9070 with upscaling enabled — a significant reduction that indicates real optimisation work rather than just spec inflation that was walked back.
Console players note: A day-one launch patch added a 60fps Performance Mode for PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X. Xbox Series S is limited to a single Quality Mode targeting 30fps.
Console Performance — and Xbox Series S Left Out
On PlayStation 5 Pro and PlayStation 5, The Blood of Dawnwalker feels close to 60fps in Performance Mode. On Xbox Series X, Performance Mode targets 60fps as well, with a Balanced Mode at 40fps available for players with 120Hz displays. The game scales down visually on consoles compared to PC, but it holds together.
Xbox Series S is the exception. Rebel Wolves has not implemented a Performance or Balanced Mode for Series S hardware, leaving its players with a single Quality option targeting 30fps. The studio confirmed that the gap between Series X and Series S in an Unreal Engine 5 open world made 60fps on Series S impossible without significant visual compromises the team wasn’t willing to make.
What Rebel Wolves Got Right
Rebel Wolves is a relatively new studio, founded in 2021 by former CD Projekt Red developers. The Blood of Dawnwalker is their first game, which makes its technical performance all the more striking. Larger, more established studios have shipped UE5 titles with worse stability records.
The difference seems to come down to scope management and upscaling strategy. Unlike many UE5 games that force Temporal Super Resolution by default, Dawnwalker supports all three major upscalers — Nvidia DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS — and lets players choose based on their hardware. It also treats the SSD requirement as genuinely mandatory, with 60GB of storage on fast drives reducing the asset-streaming bottlenecks that cause stutters in other games.
Whether that combination holds up at scale — across a full playthrough, in the most demanding open-world areas — will become clearer in the days ahead. For now, Rebel Wolves has done something that felt increasingly unlikely: shipped an ambitious Unreal Engine 5 game that players can actually run without a technical ordeal.
