What happens to a game that raised nearly $3 million from 18,000 backers, completed a vertical slice, and still never made it to release? For Armed Fantasia: To the End of the Wilderness, the answer came this week in the form of a Digital Bros earnings report. The Wild Arms spiritual successor has been discontinued, along with two other projects, four years after its successful crowdfunding campaign.
The cancellation was announced by Digital Bros, the parent company of 505 Games, in its financial results for the fiscal year ending June 2026. Alongside Armed Fantasia, the company also shut down Directorate: Novitiate and a sequel to free-to-play title Battle Island. The combined write-off totalled €17.6 million, with an additional €1 million in impairment losses on other games facing reduced sales expectations.
Four Years from Kickstarter to Cancellation
Armed Fantasia was first revealed in 2022 as part of a “Double Kickstarter” campaign alongside Penny Blood, a separate spiritual successor to the Shadow Hearts series. The joint campaign raised ¥379,328,385 (approximately $2.4 million) from roughly 18,000 backers — a strong showing that suggested genuine demand for a return to the style of role-playing game that Wild Arms popularised in the PlayStation era.
The game was being developed by Wild Bunch Productions, a studio founded by the core team behind the original Wild Arms. Lead game designer Akifumi Kaneko, a veteran of the franchise, described the project as a “westernpunk” RPG with turn-based combat and a vast open world to explore. Five05 Games later signed on as publisher, and the game was originally targeted for a March 2025 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
That release date slipped. The game was postponed indefinitely, and in March 2026, Kaneko posted the campaign’s final update, revealing that the team had completed a vertical slice and handed it to the publisher. Six months later, the publisher pulled the plug entirely.
Backer impact: The Kickstarter page has not been updated since the cancellation announcement. It remains unclear whether backers will receive refunds or if Wild Bunch Productions will seek an alternative publisher.
A Familiar Story for Crowdfunding
The fate of Armed Fantasia echoes a pattern seen before in crowdfunded gaming projects. Penny Blood, the other title from the same Double Kickstarter, ran into trouble when its own crowdfunding funds were exhausted by autumn 2023. Series creator Matsuzo Machida and artist Miyako Kato reportedly continued development using their own money, but that project’s long-term viability also remains uncertain.
Digital Bros framed the cancellations as a response to “changing market conditions” and “multiple attempts to revise gameplay.” The company stated that each project underwent “a thorough review of potential” before the decision was made. For the developers at Wild Bunch Productions, however, the outcome is stark: years of work on a game that will never ship under its current arrangement.
What Comes Next for Wild Bunch?
As of this week, Wild Bunch Productions has not commented on whether it will attempt to find a new publisher for Armed Fantasia or abandon the project entirely. The studio’s silence leaves backers and fans in limbo — particularly those who backed the game during its 2022 campaign and have now waited four years without a release or a refund.
For the wider industry, the cancellation is another reminder that successful crowdfunding does not guarantee a game will reach players. Market conditions shift, publishers change their priorities, and projects that once seemed certain can vanish overnight. The original Wild Arms may have inspired Armed Fantasia, but it cannot save it from the business realities that now govern its fate.
