Phasmophobia Hits 30 Million Sales as Crimson Eye Halloween Event Returns

12 October 2026 · 3 min read · News

“My initial goal was to sell 1,000 units in the first year, so it’s hard to believe we’re celebrating 30 million.” That quote from the developer at Kinetic Games captures the scale of a journey that has turned a small Southampton studio’s co-op horror experiment into one of the best-selling independent games of the decade.

Phasmophobia has now shifted more than 30 million copies across PC and console since its Early Access launch in 2020. Kinetic Games marked the milestone on 8th October with the return of Crimson Eye, its annual Halloween event, which runs until 1st November and brings blood moon weather, seasonal rewards, and a charity fundraising tie-in to the genre-defining ghost hunting simulator.

Blood Moon Returns to Rotating Maps

For returning players, the Crimson Eye formula will feel comfortably terrifying. Blood moon weather is now guaranteed on a rotating set of maps each day, making ghosts faster and draining sanity more quickly than normal investigations. The trade-off is straightforward: higher payouts for those willing to take the risk. The event first introduced blood moon mechanics in 2024 and has run annually since, becoming one of the most anticipated dates on the Phasmophobia calendar.

This year’s rotating event maps cover much of the game’s most popular locations:

  • Tanglewood Drive
  • Camp Woodwind
  • Grafton Farmhouse
  • Bleasdale Farmhouse
  • Edgefield Road
  • Nell’s Diner
  • Willow Street
  • Point Hope (standard version only; the restricted map is excluded from the event)

Tip: Blood moon conditions make ghosts noticeably faster and sanity drops at an accelerated rate. Bring stronger crucifixes and sanity pills; the increased payouts are well worth it for prepared teams.

Community and Personal Rewards to Unlock

As with previous years, Crimson Eye is split between community-wide goals and individual challenges. If the playerbase collectively hits the community targets, everyone unlocks the Beholder ID Card and Badge alongside the Blood Moon Trophy. Personal goals reward the Blood Moon Charm, a seasonal event t-shirt, and upgrades to the Crimson Eye trophy itself. Players who already earned the trophy in previous years will receive points towards their existing one instead of a duplicate.

There are also Twitch drops available for those who prefer watching to playing: tuning into two hours of Phasmophobia streams between 8th and 15th October unlocks a Crimson Eye t-shirt cosmetic in-game. A double XP and rewards window then runs from 15th to 22nd October, giving hunters a strong reason to push through the tougher blood moon investigations during that period.

Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts Raises Money for Charity

Perhaps the most worthwhile element of this year’s event is the return of Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts, Kinetic Games’ partnership with the American Heart Association. The campaign runs during the final week of Crimson Eye, from 26th October to 1st November, and encourages players to complete hunts while raising donations for heart health research.

The Phasmophobia community raised more than $100,000 for the AHA last year, and the initiative returns for a second round with the same premise. It is a small thing for a game still technically in Early Access, but it speaks to the community Kinetic Games has built around a title that started as a one-developer passion project in a Southampton bedroom.

Still in Early Access After Six Years

Despite 30 million sales, Phasmophobia remains in Early Access on Steam, PlayStation 5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is priced at £16.75 on most storefronts. Kinetic Games has been working towards a full release, though no confirmed date has been announced for that transition yet.

For a game that began life as a virtual reality experiment built by a tiny team, the numbers tell a remarkable story. From a goal of 1,000 copies to 30 million, with a Halloween event that now draws millions of players back each October, Phasmophobia has become the rare Early Access title that defined its genre rather than simply occupying it.

Crimson Eye runs until 1st November. Whether you are chasing the blood moon trophy, grinding double XP, or just want to support the AHA charity campaign, there is plenty of reason to load up a flashlight and head back into the dark.
