Deadlock Roles Explained: All 7 Hero Roles & Flex (2026)

15 October 2026 · 3 min read · Gaming

Deadlock heroes are loosely grouped into roles — tanks, supports, gun carries, spirit carries, assassins, initiators and disruptors. But Deadlock has no role queue: thanks to its deep item system, almost any hero can flex into a different role mid-game, so these are starting points, not fixed jobs.

Here is how Deadlock’s roles work — what each one does, why nothing is locked, and which role to play.

How roles work in Deadlock

Deadlock blends MOBA and hero-shooter design, and its roles reflect that. Heroes are grouped by what they naturally do best — tanking, supporting, dealing gun or spirit damage, assassinating, initiating or disrupting — but crucially there’s no role queue. You pick any hero you like, and the team sorts out the lanes. The deep itemization system is what makes this work: buy Vitality items and a damage hero turns tanky; buy Spirit items and a gun hero gains ability power. That means roles are a guide to a hero’s strengths, not a cage — most heroes can flex into a second role depending on your build and the match.

Deadlock roles FAQ

What are the roles in Deadlock?
Heroes are grouped into tanks, supports, gun carries, spirit carries, assassins, initiators and disruptors — seven broad roles that describe what each hero does best.

Does Deadlock have a role queue?
No — you can pick any hero, and the team sorts out lanes. Deadlock’s itemization lets heroes flex roles, so nothing is locked to a fixed queue.

What’s the difference between a gun carry and a spirit carry?
A gun carry deals most of its damage with its weapon (like Haze), while a spirit carry deals damage with abilities (like Seven). Both are win-condition damage dealers.

Can a hero change roles mid-game?
Yes — that’s the point of Deadlock’s item system. Buy Vitality items to tank up, or Spirit items to add ability power, and a hero can shift role based on your build.

Which role is best for beginners?
Tanks like Abrams are the most forgiving — durable, self-sustaining and simple to play. Gun carries that stay at range are also beginner-friendly.

Deadlock is in active development, so hero roles and the item system can change between patches. We update this guide as the game evolves.
