Final Fantasy Resonance is Square Enix’s first HD-2D Final Fantasy, released on 22 October 2026, and it rebuilds the opening arc of the mobile game Brave Exvius into a full console RPG. For a fast start: learn the Stagger gauge (it is the whole combat system), spend your first Awakening on Cloud for Lasswell, keep Rain on the Warrior of Light Vision as your tank, and use Tronn as your early Breaker — the Vision that carries you through most of the story.
This beginner guide explains what the game is, how its turn-based combat actually works, who your starting party is, and exactly what to prioritise in the first few chapters. It launched to a Metacritic 86 with 90% of OpenCritic reviewers recommending it and an “Overwhelmingly Positive” Steam user rating, so it is a strong entry point for both newcomers and lapsed Final Fantasy fans. Details are drawn from the in-game systems, the FF Resonance wiki and game8’s guides, as of October 2026.
Beginner essentials at a glance
The systems and picks that matter most in your first few hours, and why.
| Priority | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Combat core | Break the Stagger gauge every fight | Staggered enemies skip their turn, take more damage and grant a bonus action |
| First Awakening | Cloud, Awakening 1 | Unlocks Braver and Stagger Power +20% immediately |
| Tank | Rain + Warrior of Light Vision | Provoke pulls aggro; physical counters punish attackers |
| Breaker | Tronn | Best early stagger-breaker; carries most of the story |
| Healer | Fina + Leah (then Terra for bosses) | Leah heals through chapters; Terra turns Fina into a magic nuke |
| Summons | Let Fina call Espers | Espers fight as a free extra party member |
What is Final Fantasy Resonance?
Final Fantasy Resonance is a turn-based HD-2D JRPG set in the world of Lapis and the Kingdom of Grandshelt, following Rain, commander of an airship squadron, alongside his friend Lasswell and the mysterious Fina. It adapts the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but the scenario and combat were built from scratch for a console RPG — events happen in a different order and new scenes are added, so prior knowledge of the mobile game is not required. You explore HD-2D towns and dungeons, pilot airships, take on side activities, and fight along a timeline-based turn order similar to Octopath Traveler, with up to four party members. The headline feature is the Visions system: phantom echoes of warriors from across Final Fantasy history — 26 in total — that you equip to teach your characters new abilities and unleash Resonance limit bursts.
Five things to do first
The early decisions that set you up for the whole game.
#1
Spend
Tank
Break
The common thread in the early game is simple: everything serves the Stagger gauge. Your Breaker (Tronn) chews through it, Cloud’s Stagger Power +20% speeds it up, and once an enemy breaks you pile on with your bonus action while its defence is down. Treat damage as a reward for breaking, not a goal on its own.

Your starting party & early Visions
You begin with Rain, Lasswell and Fina, and this trio already covers every role if you equip the right Visions. The battle strategist Nichol joins to round out the roster.
| Character | Role | Best early Vision | What it gives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rain | Tank | Warrior of Light | Provoke, counters, team-wide protection |
| Lasswell | Physical DPS | Cloud | Damage, stagger reduction, Limit Burst build |
| Fina | Healer / mage | Leah → Terra for bosses | Chapter healing, then top magic damage |
| Any slot | Breaker | Tronn | Best early stagger output |
A note on Fina: keep her on Leah for general story progression and healing, then swap her to Terra — the strongest magic-attacker Vision in the game — for boss fights where you want her dealing damage instead of babysitting health bars. Because Visions teach abilities permanently as you win battles, it is worth rotating your off-role Visions through characters during easy fights to bank their skills.

| Vision XP / wins | Bank abilities by rotating Visions in easy fights |
| Boss prep | Swap Fina from Leah to Terra for magic burst |
| Group fights | Spread stagger for a sweeping stagger → Resonance |
| Esper gauge | Summon with Fina for a free extra attacker |
