If you only ever chase two enchantments, make them Unbreaking III and Mending — the pair that keeps a full set of Netherite gear alive more or less forever. For raw damage the answer is Sharpness V on a sword or axe and Density V on the mace; for survival it is Protection IV on every armour piece. Everything else is situational, and knowing which enchantment earns its slot is the difference between a throwaway diamond pickaxe and a god-tier one.
Below is every one of Minecraft’s 42 enchantments ranked from S to D, with the exact maximum level, what it applies to and the real numbers behind each effect. All values were checked against the official mechanics and tested across Java 1.21.x and Bedrock; treat the rankings as a survival-and-general-play guide rather than a pure PvP meta, which weights combat enchantments higher.

The S-tier enchantments explained
These ten do the heaviest lifting. Most builds run the same core — Unbreaking, Mending and a role enchantment — before anything else goes on.

The one trade-off worth knowing early: Infinity and Mending cannot share a bow. Infinity saves arrows but slowly kills the bow; Mending keeps the bow alive but still burns arrows. Most players put Mending on the bow and carry a stack of arrows, saving Infinity for a dedicated backup. If you are still gearing up, our rundown of the best-selling video games of all time is a reminder of just how deep Minecraft’s systems run — it has sat at number one for years.
Best loadout for every item
Rather than rolling random books, aim straight for these god-tier setups. Swap Silk Touch in for Fortune on a pickaxe when you want to move whole blocks (ancient debris, ore, glass) instead of raw drops.
| Item | God-tier enchantment set |
|---|---|
| Helmet | Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Chestplate | Protection IV, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Leggings | Protection IV, Swift Sneak III, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Boots | Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Soul Speed III, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Sword | Sharpness V, Looting III, Sweeping Edge III, Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Mace | Density V, Wind Burst III, Fire Aspect II, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Spear | Lunge III, Sharpness V, Fire Aspect II, Looting III, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Pickaxe | Efficiency V, Fortune III (or Silk Touch), Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Axe | Efficiency V, Sharpness V, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Bow | Power V, Flame, Punch II, Infinity or Mending, Unbreaking III |
| Crossbow | Quick Charge III, Piercing IV (or Multishot), Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Trident | Impaling V, Loyalty III, Channeling, Unbreaking III, Mending |
| Elytra | Unbreaking III, Mending |
Two of those slots have a fork in the road. On the trident you choose between Loyalty (throw and it comes back) and Riptide (ride the trident itself), because Riptide blocks both Loyalty and Channeling. On the crossbow it is Piercing versus Multishot — Piercing for single-target damage through crowds, Multishot for a wide burst. Players who split their time across shooters will recognise the pattern from ranked lists like our best Valorant agents tier list: pick for your role, not for the flashiest number.
Enchantment conflicts: which ones can’t mix
| Category | You can only pick one |
|---|---|
| Sword / axe damage | Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods (and Breach/Density on the mace) |
| Armour protection | Protection, Blast Protection, Fire Protection, Projectile Protection |
| Mining tools | Fortune or Silk Touch |
| Boots | Depth Strider or Frost Walker |
| Bow | Infinity or Mending |
| Crossbow | Multishot or Piercing |
| Trident | Riptide blocks both Loyalty and Channeling |
One recent change catches people out: Lunge, the new spear enchantment added in the 1.21.11 update, briefly could not be combined with Mending. That restriction was removed a snapshot later, so a modern spear can run Lunge and Mending together. Always check the current version if an older guide tells you otherwise.
How to get the best enchantments
There are three routes, and the fastest players use all three. An enchanting table ringed by 15 bookshelves gives the highest-level rolls, but they are random and cost lapis lazuli plus XP levels. An anvil gives full control: gather enchanted books and apply exactly what you want, at the cost of a rising “Too Expensive” XP penalty if you reuse the same item too often.
The most reliable source of top-tier books is librarian villager trading. Cure or trade up a librarian and you can lock in specific enchanted books — Mending is one of the most sought-after trades in the game, since it is a treasure enchantment you cannot pull from a table. Treasure-only enchantments include Mending, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst, Frost Walker and the two curses. Fishing and loot chests round out the supply.
