Simulation versus arcade sports
Sports games split into two camps. The big annual sims — EA Sports FC, NBA 2K, Madden, F1 — chase realism, official licences and deep career and Ultimate Team modes. The arcade side — Rocket League, Mario Tennis, Wii Sports, Tony Hawk — throws realism out for pure pick-up-and-play fun. The sims are where the money and the esports are; the arcade games are where the laughs and the couch multiplayer live. This list keeps a top pick for both.
