Frozen 3’s First Footage Just Dropped — And That Villain Looks Terrifying

16 August 2026 · 4 min read · News

Eight years after Frozen 2 left audiences hanging, Disney finally pulled back the curtain on Frozen 3 — and the first footage suggests the franchise is heading somewhere considerably darker than a singalong in Arendelle. Shown to a packed Honda Center at Friday night’s D23 Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim, the clip introduced a mysterious new villain, confirmed Anna’s long-awaited wedding, and gave Olaf a romantic subplot that lands as the film’s biggest laugh.

The presentation capped an evening of major reveals at Disney’s fan event, with stars Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell taking the stage to perform new material before the footage debuted. What followed was a glimpse of a Frozen world that its own creators describe as more dangerous than anything we’ve seen before.

A Cursed Frozen Heart

The footage opens on the night of Anna and Kristoff’s wedding — the ceremony that Frozen 2‘s post-credits scene promised would eventually happen. But the celebrations are cut short when a curtain of Northern Lights descends upon Arendelle’s fjord, carrying with it what the film’s new songs describe as a “cursed frozen heart.”

A jagged snowflake drifts down across the kingdom before Elsa freezes it into a block of ice. Curious, she investigates — and a glittering frozen walkway materialises, stretching from the fjord directly into the shimmering aurora above. It’s a striking visual sequence, and it clearly serves as the gateway to whatever adventure pulls the characters away from home.

“Look what the Northern Lights dragged in. The famous sisters of Arendelle! We finally meet.”

That line — delivered by an unseen female figure draped in a dark cloak and surrounded by more of those jagged, menacing snowflakes — is as close as the footage comes to showing us the villain. Her face stays hidden throughout, but the description from outlets in attendance paints a vivid picture: a woman with short black hair, a dramatic cape that one source likened to a moving bat wing, and an unmistakably malevolent presence. Multiple reports note she appears to possess ice-based powers that rival Elsa’s own.

Key detail: Idina Menzel described the world beyond the portal as “a frozen land more wild and dangerous than anything Elsa has ever created” — the biggest hint yet that Frozen 3 will push its heroine into genuinely uncharted territory.

Disney is keeping the villain’s identity, name and motivations firmly under wraps. What we do know is that she addresses Anna and Elsa directly as “the famous sisters of Arendelle,” suggesting she has a specific history with — or grudge against — the kingdom’s ruling pair.

Ooooh, Samantha

If the villain footage leaned ominous, the Olaf segment went full romcom. Josh Gad joined Bell and Menzel on the D23 stage to perform a new song dedicated to the snowman’s one true love: a character named Samantha.

The track reportedly blends calypso and disco influences — a fittingly eccentric choice for a character who once wandered through an enchanted forest calling out a made-up name to an imaginary friend. That Frozen 2 post-credits gag, where Olaf briefly mentioned a companion called Samantha, now appears to be paying off as an actual romantic subplot in the third film.

The lighter material doesn’t entirely vanish once the adventure begins, either. In the footage, Anna chides Kristoff for failing to carry her wedding dress train, and Olaf celebrates catching the bridal bouquet — before promptly shouting “they were doing mouth to mouth stuff!” about the newly-weds. Classic Olaf.

More Wild and Dangerous Than Ever Before

Beyond the villain and the romance, the footage confirmed significant visual changes for the franchise’s leads. Elsa appears in a new pink gown — a notable departure from the icy blues and whites that defined her previous looks — while Anna is seen in her wedding dress, confirming the ceremony is more than just a passing reference.

The mysterious stone that Elsa studies on the dock appears to be the key to the portal, and once the characters step through, they enter what Menzel teased as a considerably more perilous environment than the Enchanted Forest of Frozen 2. The implication is that this new world will serve as the primary setting for much of the film, taking the ensemble well beyond Arendelle’s borders.

Frozen 3 is directed by Jennifer Lee, who wrote and helmed both previous instalments, alongside co-director Trent Correy. Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are also returning, which means the new material performed at D23 — from the ominous “cursed frozen heart” number to Gad’s romantic turn — represents the film’s confirmed musical palette.

The full voice cast returns: Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, and Josh Gad as Olaf. Disney has scheduled Frozen 3 for release on 24 November 2027, slotting it into the Thanksgiving window that both predecessors used to enormous effect. The franchise has grossed nearly $2.8 billion across two films and won two Academy Awards, making this the highest-stakes animated sequel in Disney’s current pipeline.

For now, the villain’s face remains hidden and her motivations unknown. But if Friday’s footage is any indication, Frozen 3 isn’t interested in retreading familiar ground. The Northern Lights are calling — and whatever’s waiting on the other side clearly isn’t friendly.
