Gears of War: E-Day Devs ‘Proud to Be One of Xbox’s Main Titles’ Amid Exclusivity Push

4 October 2026 · 3 min read · News

With Xbox pivoting hard back toward platform exclusivity, the developers behind Gears of War: E-Day say they’re embracing the shift. Studio art director Aryan Hanbeck and creative director Matt Searcy spoke to content creator Destin Lergarie about The Coalition’s place in the Xbox portfolio — and what it means to be stewards of one of the brand’s most iconic franchises.

“We feel great because Gears has such a long, storied… It’s part of Xbox’s DNA. It’s woven into it,” Searcy said when asked about the game’s console-exclusive status. “At The Coalition, we feel pretty honoured to have Gears and be the ones bringing that legacy forward. We know how much it means to people. We know how much it means to us.”

From Multiplatform Confusion to Firm Exclusivity

The road to E-Day being a locked-in exclusive was bumpier than most realise. As recently as four months ago, there was significant confusion about which platforms the game would appear on. The Gears franchise had already broken Xbox exclusivity once — the remaster Gears of War: Reloaded launched on PlayStation 5 in August 2025, leading many to assume the series would continue appearing on Sony’s hardware.

That assumption was shut down at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, when Xbox CEO Asha Sharma declared that the Emergence Day prequel would only be coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC. It was described as a shock decision, arriving alongside Microsoft’s broader push for more exclusive first-party titles.

Perhaps even more surprising were the announcements that Fable and Halo: Campaign Evolved would remain multiplatform — meaning E-Day sits alongside Clockwork Revolution as one of the few permanent platform exclusives in Xbox’s current lineup.

What Is Gears of War: E-Day?

For those coming in fresh, E-Day is a prequel set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. Players join Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first erupts from below, igniting a desperate fight for survival. The game is built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 and includes:

  • A full campaign with online co-op support
  • Horde Siege — a reimagination of the iconic PvE mode
  • Refined Versus PvP multiplayer
  • Cloud gaming via Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW

Early Access Is Live, Full Launch October 6

Premium Edition owners have been playing since October 1, when early access opened worldwide. Standard edition players and Game Pass subscribers get full access on October 6. The game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so a single Microsoft Store purchase covers both Xbox console and Windows PC.

Pricing breaks down as follows:

  • Standard Edition: $69.99 — day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass
  • Premium Edition: $99.99 — includes early access, cosmetic weapon packs, seasonal content, and Iron
  • Premium Upgrade: $30 — adds Premium content to an existing standard edition or Game Pass subscription

A Metallica Collaboration and Marketing Push

Xbox is pulling out the stops for the launch. A Metallica collaboration scores the multiplayer debut, and the studio even partnered with Prince St. Pizza to create “The Emergence Pie” — a themed pizza tie-in that’s exactly as on-brand as it sounds.

The Disc to Digital program is also active, meaning physical disc owners can convert their copies to digital versions at no extra cost.

What This Means for Xbox Players

Gears of War: E-Day represents something of a test case for Xbox’s renewed commitment to exclusives. The franchise’s 20-year history is deeply intertwined with the Xbox brand, and The Coalition’s enthusiasm for that relationship is clear. Whether this exclusivity strategy survives the next corporate pivot remains to be seen, but for now, Marcus and Dom are home on Xbox.
