San Diego Comic-Con 2026 had barely started when Santa Monica Studio turned up with more than just a release date. God of War Laufey is officially launching on February 16, 2027 — but the studio made sure to follow that announcement with a second piece of news that may matter even more to fans who have spent months worrying about where Kratos fits in all of this.
February 16, 2027 — The Date Is Official
The announcement came during a dedicated God of War Laufey panel at SDCC, with game director Ariel Lawrence and Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog both on stage. Laufey launches exclusively on PlayStation 5. With Sony confirming it will stop producing game discs from 2028, this is also shaping up to be one of the last major God of War releases guaranteed to ship on disc at launch — worth noting for collectors.
A 2027 window had been widely expected after the physical release was confirmed earlier this year, but now there is an exact date on the calendar. February 16 is seven months away, and Santa Monica says more details will follow before the year is out.
Reaction to what has been shown so far has been split. The 20-minute gameplay segment from the PlayStation State of Play in June drew praise for its combat and visuals, but criticism for what some described as a simplified opening section — and, predictably, for the fact that Kratos is not the lead character. God of War creator David Jaffe was among the more pointed voices raising concerns. Santa Monica has stayed composed throughout, insisting that the upcoming release is a meaningful extension of everything the franchise has built.
A New Kratos Game Is Already in Development
That point was underlined dramatically at the same SDCC panel. Barlog announced that the next Kratos-led God of War game is already in development and will connect directly to Laufey’s story. No title, platform, or release window has been confirmed — but the message was unambiguous: God of War Laufey is not a spin-off. It is the first chapter of a planned two-game sequence.
“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” Barlog told the panel. “Phranque has been around since the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”
Lawrence was equally direct: “We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.”
Santa Monica Studio also has a God of War Greek Trilogy Remake in early development, covering the original PlayStation 2 and 3 era games. That puts three God of War projects at various stages simultaneously — a franchise roadmap that looked very uncertain at the start of the year.
So Who Is Faye — and What Is the Everywhen?
God of War Laufey stars Faye — wife of Kratos, mother of Atreus, and a character who died before the events of the 2018 God of War. The game opens with Kratos and Atreus burning her funeral pyre, exactly as glimpsed in that game’s opening moments, before Faye wakes in the Everywhen: a dimension beyond death where the gods linger.
Kratos appears during the gameplay shown so far — briefly aiding Faye while she is imprisoned — though how large a role he plays in the full game remains unclear. The voice cast brings back Christopher Judge as Kratos and introduces Deborah Ann Woll as Faye, alongside Perlina Lau and Jack Quaid, who voices Phranque, a cosmic cube companion that has become one of the more talked-about — and divisive — elements of the reveal.
“They told me I’m gonna be a cube. I’m like, ‘Okay!’ When they say jump, I ask how high.” — Jack Quaid on joining the cast as Phranque
February 2027 Is Going to Hurt Your Wallet
If the February 16 date holds, God of War Laufey drops into one of the most competitive release windows in recent memory. Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, Fable, and METRO 2039 are all scheduled within a fortnight of each other that same month.
For PlayStation 5 owners in particular, the first two months of 2027 are shaping up to demand some difficult decisions. Laufey’s confirmed date at least gives players time to plan — and Santa Monica Studio time to build anticipation with whatever announcements are still to come before the year is out.
