Santa Monica Studio used its SDCC 2026 panel to drop both pieces of news in the same breath, turning a single event into a franchise roadmap moment that put to rest months of speculation about where the God of War series was heading after the switch to a new protagonist.
16 February 2027 — Laufey Finally Has a Launch Window
PlayStation confirmed the date via social media alongside the panel: God of War Laufey releases on 16 February 2027, exclusively for PS5. The announcement carried the tagline “Enter the afterlife of the gods”, pointing directly to the game’s central setting.

The reveal of God of War Laufey at the State of Play in June 2026 was one of the most-watched PlayStation broadcasts on record. Much of the subsequent discussion centred on the game’s new lead, Faye, and how Santa Monica Studio would handle the transition away from Kratos as the primary playable character. A release date in February 2027 means the studio has roughly seven months to bring the game home — a tight but achievable window given that development was clearly well advanced at the time of reveal.
Kratos Is Coming Back, and Laufey Sets the Stage
Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studio’s head of creative, opened the SDCC panel not with a release date but with a confirmation about what comes after Laufey. Another God of War game starring Kratos is in active development, and it will connect directly to the events of God of War Laufey.

Barlog had previously told fans that “there’s always going to be Kratos games”, framing God of War Laufey not as a replacement but as an expansion of the universe. His SDCC statement goes further, positioning Laufey explicitly as a bridge — a story that opens narrative doors for Kratos’ return rather than closing them. How far into development the next Kratos game is, what platforms it will target, and when fans can expect to see it remain unconfirmed.
Faye’s Story: The Everywhen and Why It Matters
For those still catching up on who God of War Laufey actually follows: the game centres on Faye, known as Laufey the Just, the deceased wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. The opening sequence shows Kratos and Atreus cremating her body before Faye awakens in the Everywhen — a vast, otherworldly plane described as a kind of afterlife for gods, where she must confront fallen deities.
Deborah Ann Woll voices Faye, bringing a performance that, according to Woll herself, she is entirely confident in despite early fan pushback. “I’m totally unbothered,” she said of the backlash, “because I know it’s great.” Christopher Judge, who portrays Kratos, has described Faye as the catalyst for Kratos’ long arc toward hope and forgiveness — suggesting the two characters are more intertwined in this game than players might initially expect.
The idea for this game has been around since 2018, when the reboot launched. That the concept has survived nearly a decade of development cycles at Santa Monica Studio suggests how central it is to the studio’s longer vision for the franchise.
Physical Disc, No PC Port — What Else Is Confirmed
Santa Monica Studio confirmed ahead of the SDCC panel that God of War Laufey will be available on physical disc — a notable detail given Sony’s announcement that it will cease disc production across PlayStation from January 2028 onwards. Laufey’s February 2027 window comfortably predates that change.
One door that is firmly closed, however, is a PC release. Sony has stepped back from its previous policy of bringing single-player first-party titles to PC, meaning God of War Laufey will remain a PS5 exclusive. There are no plans for a PC port.
February 2027 is shaping up to be one of the most crowded months in recent gaming memory. Alongside Laufey, the window currently includes the new Tomb Raider, Persona 4 Revival, Fable, and Metro 2039. For PlayStation fans, however, the God of War franchise has consistently proven it can cut through even the most competitive release periods.
