GTA 6 Took Rockstar North’s Own Studio Head 80 Hours to Finish

28 August 2026 · 3 min read · News

How long is GTA 6? It’s one of the most searched questions about the game, and now there’s an actual answer — sort of.

In a preview interview with the New York Times, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, revealed that his own playthrough of Grand Theft Auto 6 clocked in at around 80 hours. Nelson completed that run in February 2026, covering the main story alongside “some optional goals with narrative ramifications.” That’s the headline number, though the reality is more layered.

What Those 80 Hours Actually Mean

Nelson’s playthrough isn’t a strict main-story-only time, and it isn’t a completionist run either. It sits somewhere in the middle: the full campaign, with a slice of optional content that had actual consequences for the narrative rather than just collectible-hunting.

That distinction matters. “Optional goals with narrative ramifications” suggests GTA 6 is designed more like Red Dead Redemption 2 than its predecessors, where side missions and activities feed back into the story rather than existing as separate, detachable distractions. Nelson made this explicit in the interview, discussing how Rockstar builds the game around the idea of player choice: what happens if someone does something different, or goes off the rails?

For players who want a rough sense of what to expect:

  • Main story only (focused): estimated 35–45 hours based on the 68 confirmed campaign missions
  • Story + optional content: 60–80 hours, depending on how much side activity you pursue
  • 100% completion: likely 100+ hours, clearing all collectibles, activities, and side quests

For comparison, GTA 4 and GTA 5 each run roughly 30 hours for the main story. Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s most recent single-player release, clocks in at 50 to 60 hours. GTA 6 would be the longest Rockstar game ever made — and by a noticeable margin.

The Chapter Structure Behind It

The length isn’t just a function of more content — it reflects a deliberate structural choice. GTA 6 is built in chapters, a format Nelson has discussed in relation to how Rockstar paces the game’s story. The chapter structure lets the studio control how the narrative escalates, establishing major story beats before building additional layers around them.

It also explains why optional goals can carry “narrative ramifications.” In a chapter-based game, the story has defined waypoints — and side objectives taken before or after those waypoints can change how certain scenes land. It’s a more sophisticated design than the pure “main missions vs. side missions” split of earlier GTA titles.

Rockstar North: Rob Nelson leads Rockstar North, the Edinburgh studio that has been central to Grand Theft Auto since the franchise’s origins. GTA 6 is the biggest project the studio has ever been part of.

Nelson’s Own Advice: Don’t Rush It

The 80-hour figure didn’t just provide a benchmark — it came with a recommendation. Nelson told the New York Times that he hopes players take their time with GTA 6 rather than sprinting through it. Given that the game is structured around narrative ramifications, rushing past optional content means missing some of what Rockstar considers the actual story.

That’s consistent with what Rockstar has built. Grand Theft Auto 6 reportedly has no shortage of activities beyond the main missions: basketball, fishing, exercising, street racing, and a range of open-world pursuits that reward exploration over efficiency. The extended look released yesterday on Netflix gave the first proper view of just how dense the world of Leonida actually is — and how many layers it has beyond the critical path.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the most instructive comparison here. That game was roughly 50 to 60 hours long, and players are still discovering hidden details and interactions six years after launch. If GTA 6 is built to the same standard of depth — which the extended look suggests it is — then Nelson’s 80 hours represents a floor, not a ceiling.

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026. No PC release date has been announced. Whether or not players take Nelson’s advice and slow down, the scale of what’s been built in Leonida — partly here in Edinburgh — means most will be playing well into next year.
