Hideo Kojima Confirms Bill Skarsgård Will Lead Physint — Yoji Shinkawa on Character Design

18 September 2026 · 3 min read · News

Hideo Kojima used the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast to do something he hasn’t had to do in quite a while: start fresh. With PHYSINT now under Microsoft’s wing after Sony’s departure, Kojima emerged with a new poster, a new tagline, and the most significant casting announcement the project has seen — Bill Skarsgård as the game’s lead.

Bill Skarsgård and the Full Cast

Skarsgård — best known for playing Pennywise in the It films and the villain Marquis in John Wick: Chapter 4 — becomes the fourth publicly confirmed cast member for PHYSINT, joining an already impressive ensemble. The confirmed cast so far:

  • Bill Skarsgård — lead role (character name unconfirmed, working name “John Physint”)
  • Charlee Fraser (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga)
  • Don Lee (Train to Busan)
  • Minami Hamabe (Godzilla Minus One)

Kojima confirmed the casting in a written statement, describing Skarsgård as a natural fit: “We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”

More casting is still in progress. Additional “talent scans and collaborations with outside creators” were referenced in Kojima’s statement, suggesting the ensemble will grow before any release window is announced.

Yoji Shinkawa Returns

Tucked into the announcement — and arguably the news that will land hardest with longtime Kojima fans — is the confirmation of Yoji Shinkawa on “character and mechanical design.” Shinkawa is the artist responsible for essentially every iconic visual in the Metal Gear Solid series: Solid Snake’s stealth suit, the Genome Soldiers, Revolver Ocelot, the various Metal Gear mech designs. He also contributed to Death Stranding at Kojima Productions.

Shinkawa’s involvement is not just creatively significant — it is also reassuring context after the uncertainty that followed the Sony-to-Xbox transition. His confirmed presence suggests the core creative team carried over intact through the publisher change.

From PlayStation to Xbox

The casting news arrives in a significantly changed context for PHYSINT. Earlier in 2026, Sony reportedly cut ties with Kojima Productions over budget overruns and missed milestones — what sources described as a messy split. Microsoft moved quickly to pick up the project, adding it to its publishing slate alongside the separate Kojima horror project OD.

Kojima’s appearance at the Xbox Tokyo Game Show presentation marked the formal restart of PHYSINT’s public marketing. The new poster carries the tagline “The Next Cold War Begins” — the only narrative clue available right now — and credits both MetaHuman and 3Lateral (two Epic Games-owned technologies) for high-fidelity digital human creation, suggesting a production pipeline aligned with the most demanding cinematic game projects.

Key point: PHYSINT has moved from PlayStation to Xbox as publisher. The game is expected on Xbox consoles and PC, with no confirmed release window.

What Is Physint, and When Might It Arrive?

Kojima has described PHYSINT as “the culmination of more than 40 years” of his career — a stealth-action espionage game that sits in the direct creative tradition of Metal Gear Solid. It is not a continuation of any existing franchise, but Yoji Shinkawa on character design and the spy-thriller tone of the new tagline make the lineage clear enough.

No gameplay footage has been shown publicly, and no release window has been given. Given where production appears to stand, analysts have suggested PHYSINT may not arrive until the launch of Xbox’s next-generation Project Helix hardware — though this has not been confirmed. For now, what Kojima delivered at Tokyo Game Show is something simpler: a signal that the project is alive, the team is intact, and production is moving forward in earnest.
