System Shock VR has been officially announced, closing out the VR Games Showcase on August 13 as the event’s final — and most surprising — reveal. The game is a full VR adaptation of Nightdive Studios’ 2023 System Shock remake, being developed by specialist VR porting studio Flat2VR Studios and coming to Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and PC VR via SteamVR.
A Straight VR Adaptation, Not a Spinoff
This is not a reimagining or a parallel story. System Shock VR picks up exactly where the original remake’s narrative begins: you were caught hacking into TriOptimum Corporation, corporate exec Edward Diego offered you a deal, you accepted, and six months later you wake up on Citadel Station as everything falls apart around you.
According to Flat2VR Studios, the aim is a faithful VR translation — keeping the mechanics, environments, and atmosphere of the 2023 game intact while adapting them for immersive headset play. This is the same approach Flat2VR has used on other high-profile VR ports rather than cutting the experience down for a shorter runtime or reimagining it as something new. As PC Gamer noted, it is a straight VR translation of the original game rather than a Half-Life: Alyx-style spinoff.
Flat2VR and the Nightdive Partnership
Flat2VR Studios is a studio that has carved out a specific niche: taking well-regarded flat-screen games and building high-quality VR adaptations rather than leaving VR players with afterthought ports. Their partnership with Nightdive Studios — the team behind the System Shock remake and the System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition remaster — suggests this is a serious, sanctioned project rather than a rushed platform expansion.
System Shock VR is now available to wishlist on Steam, as well as through the PlayStation VR2 and Meta Quest storefronts. No release date has been set. The game is coming to all three major VR platforms simultaneously, which points to confidence in the scope and ambition of the project from both studios.
Why System Shock Works in VR
Few genres sit as naturally in VR as the immersive sim. System Shock’s Citadel Station is a richly detailed environment: corridors thick with narrative, terminals to hack, enemies to outmanoeuvre, and an atmosphere that rewards close attention to your surroundings as much as quick reflexes. The 2023 remake — which PC Gamer scored 80% and named Best Remake of 2023 in its annual awards — already did exceptional work recreating that claustrophobic sense of place.
Putting that experience behind a headset is a logical next step. The first-person perspective, the environmental storytelling, the tension of moving through an occupied space station — all of these are elements that land harder in VR than on a flat screen. The SHODAN boss sequences, the hacking minigames, the creeping dread of exploring a station that has turned against you: on paper, all of this translates well to a medium built on presence and immersion. Whether Flat2VR can capture that in practice remains to be seen, but the source material gives them a strong foundation.
Platforms confirmed: Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and PC VR (SteamVR). Wishlist now open; no release date announced.
What to Expect Next
System Shock VR currently has no release window. The announcement at the VR Games Showcase was primarily a reveal and wishlist launch rather than a full debut with a date attached. Flat2VR and Nightdive have not shared details on pricing, or whether the VR version will require ownership of the 2023 base game.
The original System Shock remake released in May 2023 after a lengthy development and a $1.3 million crowdfunding campaign, ultimately winning over both long-time fans of the 1994 original and players coming to the series fresh. If System Shock VR can translate that goodwill into the headset market, it stands to become one of the more compelling new VR game announcements of the year.
