Star Wars Zero Company Only Has One Jedi — And That’s Exactly the Point

25 July 2026 · 3 min read · News

In most Star Wars games, Force powers are there for the taking. You are a Jedi, you swing a lightsaber, you push stormtroopers off walkways. It is the series default. Star Wars Zero Company, the Clone Wars tactics game from Bit Reactor and Respawn Entertainment launching on 27 August, is doing something deliberately different — and one small rule illustrates the whole design philosophy.

The Rule: One Jedi, Full Stop

In Star Wars Zero Company your squad is built from two types of Operators: Authored Operators, who are named story characters that join as the campaign unfolds, and Custom Operators, recruits you create and hire at the Den between missions XCOM-style. You can fill your squad of four with entirely custom mercenaries if you want — a Twi’lek scoundrel, a Rodian scout, a full team of astromechs. Almost anything goes.

Except Jedi. The Jedi Padawan class is an exotic class, and exotic classes are locked to specific Authored Operators. The Jedi slot belongs to Tel-Rea Vokoss, a Tognath Padawan who joined Zero Company after her master was killed and who is fighting to honour his final mission. You cannot make a custom Jedi. You cannot have two Jedi in a squad. EA confirmed it directly in their official FAQ: “Tel-Rea is the only Jedi Padawan class Operator in Star Wars Zero Company — be careful that nothing unfortunate happens to her.”

The Mandalorian class works the same way, locked exclusively to Cly Kullervo, one of the last surviving members of the ancient Clan Verminoth.

Why Scarcity Makes the Squad Stronger

The Clone Wars setting is the key context here. Jedi were not abundant during this era — they were stretched thin across a galaxy at war, and their deaths carried weight because they were irreplaceable. Zero Company reflects that reality. Tel-Rea is not just a character class choice; she is a member of a vanishing order in a universe that is about to make them extinct.

Bit Reactor’s design approach, confirmed through gameplay previews, treats Zero Company less like a traditional strategy game and more like a squad RPG — closer to Mass Effect than XCOM in its character philosophy. The Authored Operators each have evolving stories, bond mechanics that unlock new abilities, and relationships that develop across the campaign. Tel-Rea being the only Jedi is not a limitation — it is what makes her matter.

Permadeath Changes Everything

Zero Company uses an injury-based permadeath system. Any Operator — except Hawks, the player character — can sustain up to three injuries before they are permanently lost. Injuries persist between missions and require resources to treat. On paper, it is the familiar XCOM calculus: weigh the risk, protect your best operatives, sometimes sacrifice a custom recruit to save a story character.

But Tel-Rea changes that calculus. She is the only Jedi you will ever have. Lose her and the Jedi Padawan class is gone for the rest of your campaign. EA’s warning in the FAQ — “be careful that nothing unfortunate happens to her” — is not a throwaway line. It is a genuine heads-up that the game is designed to make you feel her loss, and to make protecting her a strategic priority rather than an emotional afterthought.

What This Means for Your Squad

Star Wars Zero Company launches on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 27 August 2026. The squad-building system is designed to reward experimentation — you can lean on Authored Operators like Trick, Luco Bronc, Kabb Uppercut and Jae Mordant, or build rosters of entirely custom mercenaries from eight species. The one constant, if you want Force abilities in your corner, is Tel-Rea.

For a game rooted in the Clone Wars — a conflict defined by loss, sacrifice, and the slow erosion of the Jedi Order — having exactly one Jedi in your squad feels less like a design constraint and more like the whole point.
