Twenty-plus years. That’s how long Onimusha fans waited for a new mainline game. Capcom has now confirmed the wait was worth it: Way of the Sword sold over one million units on its first day of release, 4 September 2026, making it the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s history.
The milestone matters beyond a single game. Driven by the launch, the Onimusha series as a whole has now crossed 10 million units in total lifetime sales — a mark that secures its place among Capcom’s most enduring action franchises, alongside Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry.
A 20-Year Wait Rewarded
The last mainline entry in the series came out in 2002. Onimusha: Way of the Sword had a great deal to prove when it arrived on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this month, and by every available metric, it delivered.
Steam tells part of the story: the game peaked at 85,081 concurrent players, a strong result for a franchise that’s been dormant long enough that many younger players never grew up with the originals. In the UK, the launch leaned heavily towards Sony’s platform — PS5 accounted for 87% of physical sales in the first week.
The numbers: 1 million+ day-one worldwide · 85,081 Steam peak · 87% PS5 in UK · Onimusha series now 10 million+ lifetime
Those figures also mean the new title has already hit roughly half the total sales of the previous franchise best-seller, 2002’s Samurai’s Destiny, which shifted 2.1 million copies over its entire commercial life. The new Onimusha matched that pace in a single day.
Why the Game Earned Those Numbers
Capcom moved the release date forward in July, pulling it from the previously announced 25 September window to an earlier 4 September slot. The change raised questions at the time, but the finished product has since earned strong reviews. Eurogamer’s Dom Peppiatt singled out its deep swordplay and its deliberate absence of common Soulslike design tropes — increasingly refreshing qualities in a market saturated with stamina-bar combat systems.
The game also benefits from HD-2D aesthetics applied to the historical Japan setting — a visual style that has proved commercially popular across several Square Enix titles, and that Capcom has now demonstrated applies equally well to its own samurai-era IP.
Part of Capcom’s Extraordinary 2026
This launch doesn’t exist in isolation. The publisher has had a genuinely remarkable year. Resident Evil Requiem sold eight million copies in under a week; original IP Pragmata shifted 2.5 million in its first two days; Monster Hunter Stories 3 maintained the franchise’s momentum throughout the year. This is Capcom’s fourth major release of 2026, and it continues to demonstrate that dormant series, properly revived, can recapture and expand their original audiences.
Capcom has also been open about its strategy going forward: the company plans to “re-activate” more of its classic IP. Given the consistency of results, few would bet against it working again.
Where Does the Series Go From Here?
Day-one figures of one million send a clear signal. Capcom will know that better than most. The question now is whether the title sustains its commercial momentum over weeks — and whether the Onimusha series re-establishes itself as a regular release, rather than a one-off revival.
The action game market is competitive, and players have more options than ever. But if 2026 is any guide, the publisher has a formula that works: pick a franchise that hasn’t been seen in years, build it properly, and trust that audiences will show up.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available now on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
