Podcast interviews with senior executives have a way of producing announcements nobody planned. Jeffrey Gattis, head of Amazon Games, was discussing the role of AAA titles within the company on The Game Business podcast when he appeared to confirm something Crystal Dynamics has not officially said: Tomb Raider: Catalyst is no longer coming in 2027. Amazon then walked it back. The game’s official site still says 2027. And yet the original 2027 window is looking increasingly uncertain.
What Gattis Actually Said
The relevant quote, delivered in passing rather than as a formal announcement: “We have obviously announced the two Tomb Raider titles. Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis comes 12 February, next year, and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one. We’re excited about those.”
Tomb Raider: Catalyst was announced in December 2025 for a 2027 release window, developed by Crystal Dynamics — the studio behind the Survivor trilogy that began with the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot. Legacy of Atlantis is a separate title, a remake announced at the same time, which was originally planned for 2026 before being delayed to February 2027. Gattis referred to Catalyst as “the next one” after Legacy of Atlantis, and placed it squarely in 2028.
Amazon’s Walk-Back — and What It Means
Within hours, Amazon Games issued a statement to games press: “We don’t have anything new to share about Catalyst’s timing. The game is progressing well and we look forward to sharing more details as we get closer.”
That is not a denial. Saying a game is “progressing well” while declining to confirm its release window is a holding statement, not a correction. Gattis did not appear to be speaking off the cuff — he framed both titles together with a clear sequencing. The most likely reading is that the 2028 date is accurate and the official announcement is not yet ready. Crystal Dynamics has not commented separately, and the official Tomb Raider website still lists Catalyst as a 2027 title as of publication.
A 2028 Release Changes the PS5 Equation
If Catalyst does land in 2028, it arrives after Sony’s confirmed cutoff for producing physical PlayStation 5 discs. Sony confirmed earlier this year that it will stop manufacturing game discs from 2028 — meaning any title releasing in 2028 or later faces the prospect of being a digital-only release on PS5, unless a publisher produces a limited physical run ahead of the manufacturing deadline.
That would make Catalyst the first new mainline Tomb Raider game in the franchise’s 30-year history that PlayStation players cannot own on disc at launch. Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam would not be subject to the same restriction. It is an unusual situation, and one Amazon Games has not addressed in its statement.
What We Know About Both Titles
Legacy of Atlantis — the nearer of the two — is confirmed for February 12, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is a remake built around an original Lara Croft storyline set in the world of Atlantis, separate from the Survivor trilogy’s continuity — an action-adventure exclusive to the current generation of hardware.
Catalyst is an entirely new game, also from Crystal Dynamics, targeting the same platforms. Beyond the studio involvement, survival of the original Crystal Dynamics creative vision, and the 2027 window now apparently in question, Amazon and Crystal Dynamics have shared little about the game’s setting, story, or where it sits in the Tomb Raider timeline. More details are expected later in 2026 — or, if the delay is real, possibly not until early 2027.
