Marvel’s ability to greenlight and then reverse major content decisions has become a recurring feature of the Disney+ streaming era. But the cancellation of Wonder Man Season 2 hits differently — because this time, a showrunner has gone on record to describe exactly how far along production was before the plug was pulled.
Andrew Guest, the series’ showrunner and co-creator, posted a TikTok video this weekend responding directly to fan reaction around the cancellation — and what he revealed is striking.
A Renewal That Was Reversed: The Timeline
Wonder Man debuted on Disney+ in January 2026, starring Yahya Abdul Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring actor who gains superpowers, alongside Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery. The critical reception was strong — Abdul Mateen II would go on to win an Emmy for his performance. In March 2026, Disney formally announced a Season 2 renewal.
Then, on 30 July, Variety reported that the renewal had been reversed. Disney+ had quietly cancelled the show without warning, and the writers’ room — scheduled to open in August — had never formally been convened. The show’s writing staff had been released to pursue other projects in the months following the March announcement, without any explanation from the studio.
What Guest Said — and Why It Matters

The production was supposed to begin early next year, and there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did. Guest addressed the speculation head-on from the start: “This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin’s schedule — and no one’s schedule — was an issue.” That last clarification is pointed. Destin Daniel Cretton directed Wonder Man and also directed the just-released Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened to $927 million globally this weekend. Fans had speculated that Cretton’s schedule was stretched by the film’s production — Guest is flatly denying it.
The admission that he had already written Season 2’s first episode, and that a full-season outline was in place, makes the reversal harder to swallow. Guest noted that “everyone felt really good about it” going into what should have been pre-production. The decision, he made clear, came down to an internal Disney-Marvel calculation he wasn’t party to — and wasn’t given financial context for.
Abdul Mateen II reacted more briefly on Instagram: “Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. That’s life, right? Everything will shake out.”
What Happens to Wonder Man Now?
The show’s characters are not necessarily done with the MCU. Variety reported at the time of the cancellation that Wonder Man characters could still appear in other Marvel projects down the line — which is standard language in Marvel’s content decisions and leaves the door open without committing to anything concrete.
The broader context matters here. Marvel’s MCU slate for 2027 is deliberately leaner than previous years, with Kevin Feige signalling a shift toward fewer, higher-impact projects. Wonder Man — a critically well-received but niche property — may simply not fit the streamlined model Disney is now pursuing.
Wonder Man is still available to stream in full on Disney+. Whether Simon Williams ever makes it back into the MCU, in any form, remains to be seen — but the abrupt end of a renewed show, with contracts signed and scripts written, is an unusually transparent failure of content strategy. Guest deserves credit for saying so clearly.
