Modern Warfare 4 Double XP Tokens Will Finally Only Count Down During Matches

29 September 2026 · 4 min read · News

After seven years of watching double XP tokens tick away while you sat in a pre-game lobby, Call of Duty is finally fixing the problem. Infinity Ward has confirmed that starting with Modern Warfare 4, launching 23 October 2026, double XP tokens will only consume their timer when you are actively inside a match.

The announcement, posted on the official Call of Duty account on 28 September, was accompanied by a simple promise: “More time to make your 2XP count.” It is a small change on paper but one that fundamentally alters how players will approach levelling up in the new shooter.

How Double XP Tokens Worked Before

Double XP tokens have been a fixture of Call of Duty for close to a decade. Typically lasting between 15 minutes and an hour, they double the experience points you earn — speeding up weapon unlocks, Soldier Rank progression, and Battle Pass tiers. The catch was always the timer. The moment you activated one, the clock started, whether you were dropping into a match, waiting in a queue, or browsing the main menu.

That meant a significant chunk of each token was simply wasted. A 30-minute token might deliver only 20 minutes of actual boosted gameplay, with the rest lost to lobby transitions, map loading screens, and the occasional trip to the fridge. For players who relied on tokens to push through Prestige ranks or grind weapon levels, the inefficiency was a constant source of frustration.

What Changes in Modern Warfare 4

From launch day, the timer will pause whenever you are not in an active match. Activate a 30-minute double XP token and you will get a full 30 minutes of boosted XP — every second spent actually earning experience. No more burning token time watching a “Finding Match” spinner.

Key detail: Existing double XP tokens earned in current Call of Duty titles, including Black Ops 7 and Warzone, will carry over and be usable in Modern Warfare 4 from day one.

The change applies to all token types: Player 2XP for rank and Prestige progress, Weapon 2XP for gun levels and attachments, and Battle Pass 2XP for tier advancement. It also means that stacking tokens during global double XP events — which Activision frequently runs at launch — will be more efficient than ever, since every second of the overlap will count towards actual progression.

Part of a Broader Push to Win Back Players

This is not an isolated fix. Infinity Ward has been on a visible listening tour ahead of Modern Warfare 4’s release. Last week, the studio confirmed a long-awaited skin toggle for Warzone, allowing players to replace collaborator cosmetics with default operator models. The beta earlier this summer also saw adjustments to matchmaking, including more open playlists with reduced skill-based matching.

“More time to make your 2XP count. Tokens will count down in game time and your existing tokens will be usable starting in Modern Warfare 4.” — Call of Duty, 28 September 2026

The timing is not coincidental. Black Ops 7 underperformed relative to Activision’s expectations, and the competitive landscape this autumn is fierce. Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives this fall, threatening to absorb an enormous share of player attention and spending. Call of Duty cannot afford to give anyone a reason to look elsewhere — not when the entire gaming world will have an obvious alternative on the shelf.

What This Means for Launch Week

For players planning to grind through Modern Warfare 4’s 55 Soldier Ranks at launch, the token change reshapes the optimal strategy. Rather than activating a token and hoping to squeeze in a few quick matches before it expires, you can now plan a focused session knowing the full duration is yours. The best approach will be to bank tokens before launch, then deploy them in concentrated blocks during objective-heavy modes like Hardpoint and Domination, where XP earnings already outpace Team Deathmatch.

It is the kind of quality-of-life improvement that seems obvious in hindsight — and one that leaves players wondering why it took seven years to arrive. Whether these changes will be enough to keep Call of Duty competitive against Rockstar’s open-world juggernaut is another question entirely, but at the very least, your double XP tokens will no longer expire while you wait for a lobby.
