Deadlock’s City Never Sleeps Update Brings Six New Heroes and a Completely Redesigned Map

30 September 2026 · 4 min read · News

Eight months after its last major content drop, Valve’s invite-only MOBA Deadlock has returned with its most ambitious update yet. City Never Sleeps, which landed on 29th September, rebuilds the game’s New York-inspired map from the ground up, introduces six new heroes, and adds an entirely new economy system through the Broker merchant.

This is not a balance patch. Valve’s update notes contain almost no numerical tweaks. Instead, it is a full visual and mechanical overhaul that touches nearly every corner of the Cursed Apple — from the lanes themselves to the creatures that inhabit them.

A New York Rebuilt Lane by Lane

Each of Deadlock’s three lanes now has a distinct visual identity styled as a subway-route system. The blue lane (Broadway) runs through Uptown, Times Square and Downtown. The green lane (Greenwich) crosses Umbria University, Central Park and the Brownstones. The yellow lane (York) passes the Stock Exchange, the Seaport and the Old Fairfax Factories.

Between the main lanes, four skirmish districts serve as contested back alleys: the Theater, Chinatown, the Haunted Lot and the Plaza. Each has its own personality — the Theater features literal stage hands pulling strings on steampunk automatons, while Chinatown sits beneath a bell tower that functions as a high-risk soul hotspot.

“The Cursed Apple has a new face. Each lane is now a three-stop route, numbered like a subway map.”

The previous neutral enemies have been replaced by nine new Haunt camps, each themed to its location. Expect cursed books at Past Dues, possessed gunpowder barrels at Barrel Mimics, and disembodied crawling hands at the Specimen camp.

Six New Heroes Arrive Through Player Voting

The headline additions are six new heroes, all described as “the locals” of the Cursed Apple. They are Nurse Harrow (strict, terrifying, savior), Rat King (scrappy, regal, tenacious), Solomon (strategist, focused, checkmate), Deadman Danny (reckless, high-flying, explosive), Baba (cackling, beady, hexing) and Violet (ambitious, nimble, creative).

Voting system: All voting now happens in the new Pregame lobby. The winning team’s votes count double, and your first win of the day also carries double weight. Two heroes release per week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2pm PT. The first arrives on Friday, 2nd October.

Rat King, a crowned rodent that began as a fan concept over a year ago, is widely expected to top the vote. The others are equally distinctive: Solomon floats like a chess grandmaster, Nurse Harrow wields a needle like a weapon, and Violet brings Deadlock’s first painter hero.

The Broker and Corrupted Items Change the Economy

Perhaps the most mechanically significant addition is the Broker, a moving merchant who offers powerful upgrades — each paired with a corresponding debuff. These Corrupted Items force players to weigh raw power against meaningful drawbacks, adding a layer of strategic risk that did not exist before.

The Broker roams the map, meaning encounters are not guaranteed. Players who find him early and make smart trade-offs could gain a significant edge in lane.

Map Mechanics Reward Exploration

Beyond the visual overhaul, several new map mechanics change how matches play out. The Sunken Plaza sits beneath the Plaza district — the deeper you go, the bigger the rewards, but your stamina drains and outside sounds fade away. It is a high-risk, high-reward zone that rewards players willing to venture underground.

Steam Vents scattered across the map grant temporary invisibility and minor regeneration when stood upon — a tactical tool for rotations and escapes. Tough Crates now require a Heavy Melee to break open and grant bonus souls. Hidden Healing Snacks reward keen-eyed players who explore off the main lanes.

HUD, Shop and Accessibility Overhaul

The user interface has received significant attention. Health bars are bolder and more readable, new ally indicators help track nearby teammates, and the kill feed has been cleaned up to show clearly who eliminated whom. The entire shop interface is now more intuitive with filters for faster item discovery.

Valve has also expanded accessibility options and sandbox tools, though the full details are buried in the patch notes. Thousands of new voice lines accompany the update, reinforcing the New York atmosphere.

Deadlock remains invite-only, but City Never Sleeps marks a significant step in its evolution from experimental project to genuine competitor in the MOBA space.
