How the roster works

Deadlock’s 41 heroes are usually grouped into seven broad roles — tanks, supports, gun carries, spirit carries, assassins, initiators and disruptors — but these are guidelines, not hard rules. Unlike many hero shooters, Deadlock doesn’t lock heroes into a fixed tank, damage or support queue. Its deep itemization system lets almost any hero shift roles mid-game: a gun carry can build tanky, a support can pivot to damage. That flexibility is central to the game, so treat the role groups below as a starting point for understanding each hero rather than a cage.

Deadlock characters FAQ

How many characters are in Deadlock?
As of October 2026 there are 41 playable heroes. Valve adds more regularly — the newest are Rat King, Baba and Solomon from the City Never Sleeps update.

What are the roles in Deadlock?
Heroes are loosely grouped into tanks, supports, gun carries, spirit carries, assassins, initiators and disruptors — but these are guidelines, not fixed queues.

Are heroes locked into roles?
No — Deadlock’s itemization lets almost any hero flex. A gun carry can build tanky, a support can pivot to damage, so the role groups are a starting point, not a cage.

Who are the newest Deadlock heroes?
Rat King, Baba and Solomon, all added in October 2026 as part of the City Never Sleeps update. The roster keeps growing as the game is in active development.

Which hero should a beginner pick?
Durable, straightforward heroes like Abrams or forgiving damage dealers like Infernus are good starts. See our best beginner heroes guide for the full list.

Deadlock is in active development, so the roster changes often. We update this list as Valve adds new heroes and reworks existing ones.
