“It is clear that we missed the mark on this.” Those words, from RuneScape’s creative director Mod Ryan, sum up one of the quickest reversals in MMO history. Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited — a fresh-start game mode announced on stage at RuneFest 2026 on 3 October — barely twelve days after its unveiling. The decision follows sustained player criticism that the project would fracture an already declining player base.
Reignited was pitched as RuneScape’s answer to WoW Forever: a clean slate for new and returning players, with separate characters, a fresh economy, and dedicated worlds. It was scheduled to launch on 2 December. Instead, it is dead on arrival — and Jagex says it listened to the community before pulling the plug.
What Players Objected To
The core complaint was straightforward. Reignited characters would have existed in a parallel economy with their own Grand Exchange, hiscores, and worlds. They would have needed a separate membership and could not trade or share boss instances with existing “Veteran” characters. For the players who kept RuneScape alive through years of slower growth, that felt like being asked to start over — or left behind entirely.
“The last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that.” — Mod Ryan, RuneScape creative director
Jagex apologised on 6 October and floated a revised plan three days later, including the option to “Reignite” an existing character under the current membership. It was not enough. The backlash continued, and on 15 October the studio confirmed the full cancellation.
What survives: The 2 December update still ships with the Adventure Guide, the first part of Remastered Journey, and a 10-day free trial of members’ content (2–12 December). The 2027 roadmap is unchanged.
What Still Goes Ahead
The cancellation does not strip out all of December’s planned content. Jagex will still open the gates on 2 December with a 10-day free trial. New characters — or any character that has not held membership since 2 June — can access members’ worlds and content until 12 December. The Adventure Guide and Remastered Journey launch as planned.
Plugins, a quality-of-life improvement long requested by the community, remain on track for 19 October. The 2027 roadmap, which Mod Ryan said was “overshadowed” by the Reignited controversy, retains its new quests, storyline conclusions, and Agility rework.
A Familiar Pattern
The speed of the reversal is striking, but the pattern is not new for Jagex. The studio has a history of announcing bold structural changes, facing community pushback, and course-correcting — sometimes after significant investment. What sets this apart is the swiftness: twelve days from stage reveal to full cancellation, with no compromise position surviving.
RuneScape still has hundreds of thousands of active members, though Jagex has acknowledged a long, slow decline. Finding a sustainable way to bring in new players without alienating the existing community remains the studio’s central challenge. Reignited was one answer; it will now have to find another.
