The Linn of Dee is an excellent option for a gentle 1.5-hour circular walk, with parking and bathroom facilities on site.

The route takes you through woodlands with a slight incline and steps at the start, passing a gorge where the River Dee is squeezed through a narrow rocky channel with a small waterfall.

I did this walk with friends in mid-April, and it was dry underfoot and overhead — a good sign for a Highland spring day.

Location & Getting There

The Linn of Dee car park sits about 10 km west of Braemar at the end of a single-track road. It is managed by the National Trust for Scotland, with parking and toilets at the trailhead. From here the same road continues to the Linn of Quoich (the Mar Lodge Punch Bowl), so the two pair well in one visit.

Who It Suits

This is one of the most family-friendly walks in the Cairngorms — short, well-marked and rewarding, with a genuine gorge as the highlight. It suits first-time visitors, families and anyone wanting a taste of Deeside scenery without a mountain day like the Ben Macdui hike.

  • Wear sturdy shoes — there are steps and a slight incline
