Grand Theft Auto V waited a year and seven months for its PC release. Red Dead Redemption 2 made console players wait fourteen years for the opposite journey. Rockstar Games has never been in a hurry to bring its biggest titles to personal computers. That pattern could be about to change — and dramatically so.
According to a report from GamesBeat, Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on PC sometime in the first quarter of 2027. The outlet cites four anonymous industry sources familiar with Rockstar’s plans, all of whom requested anonymity to protect business relationships. Rockstar has not commented on the claim, and no official PC version has been announced.
If the report holds, it would represent the shortest gap between a Rockstar console launch and its PC counterpart in well over a decade. The console edition of GTA 6 arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026. A January-to-March 2027 PC window means players could be waiting as little as six weeks.
A Franchise-Record Turnaround
The historical precedent makes a Q1 2027 PC release feel almost implausible. Grand Theft Auto 3 took seven months to reach PC. Vice City matched that. San Andreas waited eight. Bully stretched to two full years. Grand Theft Auto IV settled at seven months. Then came the infamous Red Dead Redemption gap of over fourteen years before its PC port finally arrived.
Even Grand Theft Auto V, which many considered Rockstar’s most PC-friendly launch to date, still required a year-and-a-half wait after its 2013 console debut. A four-month turnaround for GTA 6 would shatter that record entirely.
Key detail: Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal year closes on 31 March 2027. A Q1 PC release would land the game squarely within that window, which matters for the parent company’s financial reporting.
There is a business logic behind the timing. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called PC “more and more important” to the company at a recent shareholder meeting, though he stopped short of naming a specific GTA 6 date. Landing the PC version before the fiscal year closes would give Take-Two a significant revenue boost in its earnings report.
Why the Post-Holiday Timing Raises Eyebrows
Console players who pick up GTA 6 on launch day would face an awkward choice if the PC version arrives in January or February. The holiday season is already the most expensive time of year for gamers, and a game priced at £69.99 or higher on consoles will demand a similar investment on PC.
Rockstar has a well-documented history of encouraging players to purchase its games multiple times across platforms. A four-month gap between console and PC releases would feel like the company is asking fans to open their wallets twice in a single season — a move that could generate backlash even among the most dedicated followers of the series.
“Rockstar loves the double dip, but punching the button again so soon after the console release would surely be viewed dimly by a not-insignificant number of people.” — PC Gamer
That said, the PC version typically offers superior graphics, wider resolution support, and modding capabilities that console editions cannot match. For many players, the wait — however brief — will be worth it for the definitive version of the game.
The Roleplay and Modding Factor
The PC release carries extra weight this time around because of what has changed in the Grand Theft Auto ecosystem since the last mainline entry. Online roleplay has become a cultural phenomenon built almost entirely on PC, powered by the FiveM framework that Rockstar itself acquired through its purchase of Cfx.re in August 2023.
FiveM runs exclusively on the PC version of GTA V. Every hour of roleplay happening on servers around the world right now depends on PC hardware. When GTA 6 eventually gets its own multiplayer ecosystem, the PC version will be the foundation it is built on — making the PC release not just a port, but a strategic necessity for Rockstar’s long-term plans.
Treat It as a Rumour — For Now
GamesBeat’s report is the most specific claim yet about a GTA 6 PC window, naming a quarter and citing four sources. But plans can shift, and Rockstar has a habit of keeping its cards close to its chest until the last possible moment. Datamined files have previously pointed to active PC port work, and the Cfx.re acquisition signals clear intent, but nothing is confirmed until Rockstar says so.
The Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg at Tokyo Game Show that GTA 6 Online will arrive “next year”, which aligns with a 2027 timeline. At the same shareholder meeting, Zelnick confirmed the game ships as a single-player experience at launch, with no online mode and no microtransactions on day one.
For PC players who have grown accustomed to waiting years for Rockstar’s biggest releases, a four-month gap would feel like a gift. Whether that gift actually arrives in the first three months of 2027 remains to be seen — but the sources behind the claim suggest it is closer than anyone expected.
