The King is Watching Arrives on Console With a Clever Mechanic That PC Players Already Love

13 August 2026 · 3 min read · News

Half a million people on PC already know why The King is Watching is worth their time. Since its launch on Steam in July 2025, TinyBuild and developer Hypnohead’s roguelite city builder has accumulated strong reviews, a finalist slot at the D.I.C.E. Awards, and a player count that tends to surprise people the first time they hear it. As of last month, the console version is finally live — and the Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S editions bring the full package to a new audience.

The King is Watching launched on consoles on 29 July 2026 at a price of £12.49. It supports Xbox Play Anywhere on Microsoft’s platform, though it does not appear in Game Pass at launch.

One Mechanic to Rule Them All

Most city builders ask you to place buildings and then sit back while resources accumulate. The King is Watching has a different arrangement. The monarch at the heart of the game carries a focus mask — an L-shaped overlay that covers a limited section of your town. Buildings only generate resources when the king is watching them.

At the start of a run, the king can observe three buildings at once. Move the focus mask to your wheat fields and the grain rolls in; shift it to the barracks and your troops begin training. Leave either unwatched and production halts. The result is a constant low-level puzzle running beneath the standard city-building loop: not just what to build next, but where the king needs to look in order to make it happen.

Enemies approach in waves from outside the walls, so you are also watching the battle unfold while deciding where the king should look next. Magic spells unlock over the course of a run, giving you more direct ways to intervene — slowing enemy advances, bolstering weak points in your defence. None of it is complicated to understand, but managing it all at once is reliably demanding.

What the Console Versions Include

Console players are not getting a stripped-down port. The King is Watching arrives on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch with the Volcano Update included from day one, which introduced an additional biome to the roguelite runs. Earlier content such as the Crowns of History DLC, released in March 2026 on PC, is also available.

Platforms and price: Available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Priced at £12.49. Supports Xbox Play Anywhere. Not in Game Pass.

The tower defence elements have translated cleanly to controller inputs, according to early console impressions. Eurogamer’s Switch coverage noted that the game’s particular brand of menace — managing your gaze while keeping track of the enemy advance — comes through just as well on handheld as it does at a desk. The pace is consistent with the PC version and does not appear to have been simplified for the format.

Critical Reception and What Came Before

The King is Watching received a Metacritic score of 80 on PC and a 93 per cent recommendation rate on OpenCritic, which puts it in firm company for an independently developed strategy game. TheXboxHub gave the console version a five-out-of-five score, calling it “cruel, frantic and so impossibly clever.”

The D.I.C.E. Award finalist nomination for Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year at the 29th Annual ceremony reflects the extent to which the game landed with critics, not just players. The initial PC period saw 200,000 copies sold within the first two weeks; the total hit 500,000 by March 2026.

For anyone who has not yet encountered it, the console launch is the clearest possible entry point. The King is Watching is not a long game — a run does not take hours — but it asks more of your attention per minute than most strategy games manage. Given the mechanic is built entirely around watching, that feels like the point.
