After months of vocal criticism from players who felt Marvel’s Wolverine was too hand-holdy, Insomniac Games has finally added a toggle for the game’s controversial scent trails. Update 1.002.001, which went live on 6 October, introduces a ‘Hint’ button that lets players disable story-related scent guidance during gameplay.
The toggle is mapped to R3 on the PlayStation 5 controller by default, allowing players to switch the blue scent trails on and off at will during narrative sequences. It is the latest in a series of patches addressing what has become the game’s most divisive design choice.
Why Scent Trails Became So Controversial
Wolverine’s mutant abilities include heightened senses, which Insomniac translated into visible blue trails that guide players toward objectives, collectibles, and points of interest during story sequences. The mechanic is rooted in the character’s lore — Logan can literally track targets by smell — but many players argued it removed the satisfaction of independent exploration.
Reviews and community feedback were split. Some appreciated the accessibility of always knowing where to go; others found the trails patronising, particularly in a game world that is otherwise fairly linear. Wall of Sound’s review called the inability to disable them “bizarre” in a focused, linear game world, noting that Logan would even audibly sniff and comment on nearby items while the blue trails pulsed on screen.
Patch 1.002.001: Adds the option to toggle story-related Scent trails using the Hint button (default on R3). Also addresses community-reported bugs and crashes to improve overall game stability.
A Pattern of Incremental Concessions
This latest toggle did not arrive in isolation. Insomniac has been gradually chipping away at the scent trail system since launch. An earlier patch reduced the opacity of the trails so they were less visually intrusive. Another update gave players the option to disable scent guidance for collectibles specifically.
Each concession followed the same pattern: community pushback, followed by a patch that offered slightly more control. The full toggle for story sequences represents the most significant rollback yet — effectively admitting that the original design, which forced the trails on at all times, was too rigid.
“Our latest update for Marvel’s Wolverine is live and adds a new ‘Hint’ toggle for story-related Scent trails based on community feedback. With recent updates, you now have more control over the visibility of Scents, Audio Cues, and Nightmare Roots.”
Insomniac framed the change as a direct response to player feedback, which is notable for a studio of its size. Not every developer responds this quickly to sustained criticism about a core design pillar.
What Remains Unresolved
The toggle covers story-related scent trails, audio cues, and Nightmare Roots visibility. But some players have argued that the deeper issue is not just visual clutter — it is the game’s reluctance to let players figure things out for themselves. With the trails now toggleable, the question becomes whether Insomniac will apply similar philosophy to other guidance systems in future projects.
For now, the update is available to all PlayStation 5 owners. Players who preferred the original guided experience can leave the trails on; those who found them overbearing can press R3 and explore on their own terms. It is the compromise that should have existed at launch — and one that many players hope Insomniac carries into its next game.
