World of Warcraft’s Strangest New Bug Has Disconnected Players Still Clearing Dungeons

15 August 2026 · 3 min read · News

Picture it: you’re deep in a World of Warcraft dungeon, midway through a boss pull, when your friend’s connection drops. Their character — a sweeping-winged Evoker — goes still for a moment. The telltale signs of a disconnect. And then, without any input from the player on the other end, their character turns, charges the boss, and starts casting spells.

This is what a growing number of WoW players are reporting since the Curse of Ula’tek 12.1 patch dropped for World of Warcraft: Midnight. A Reddit post by user Stuperstrong, complete with video evidence, has lit up the WoW subreddit with players corroborating the same experience: disconnected characters continuing to fight, cast abilities, and participate in combat entirely on their own.

“Suuuper weird,” wrote one player in the thread. Their brother had hard-locked, frozen mid-dungeon, force-quit, and relogged — while his warrior was reportedly still charging the boss and landing hits. Blizzard hasn’t said a word about it.

What WoW Players Are Seeing

The standard disconnect behaviour in WoW is familiar to any long-time player: the character halts, runs into a wall if they were moving, stutters briefly, then logs out as the server catches up. What’s being reported now is different.

In Stuperstrong’s video, the disconnected Evoker doesn’t freeze. It continues using abilities and responding to the encounter — as though someone is still at the wheel. Multiple players in the thread confirmed the same thing happened to their groups, across different dungeon instances and different character classes.

“He hung there through almost the entire boss fight, and then like 30 seconds into his disconnect, his warrior charges the boss and starts hitting it.”

The video is genuinely unsettling in the way only a well-known system suddenly behaving wrong can be. For players who’ve been in WoW dungeons for years, it triggers an instinctive “that shouldn’t be happening” response.

The Leading Theory: AI Follower Tech Taking Over

Speculation in the WoW community has settled on a plausible explanation: Blizzard’s existing NPC dungeon follower system may have been quietly adapted to handle disconnects.

For several years, WoW has used AI-controlled player-character proxies that let solo players complete dungeons with a full AI party. These followers are capable of running a reasonable combat rotation and avoiding major boss mechanics — they’re not world-class, but they function.

The theory is that when a player disconnects mid-encounter, the game now briefly substitutes an AI controller to keep that character participating, buying time for the player to reconnect without the whole group’s dungeon run collapsing. It’s logical, it fits with existing Blizzard tech, and it would genuinely be a useful feature.

Alternative theory: Some suggest WoW’s one-button rotation feature could be queuing up pre-disconnect actions, but this would only explain a few seconds of activity — not a full boss fight.

The wrinkle is that if Blizzard did ship this, they didn’t announce it. No patch notes, no blog post, no developer tweet. That absence of communication is itself unusual for such a significant change to how the game handles player absence in group content.

Blizzard Hasn’t Said Anything — Which Is Its Own Story

As of writing, Blizzard has not responded to requests for comment on the phenomenon. The Curse of Ula’tek 12.1 hotfix notes mention several other disconnect-related fixes — including a bug that caused players to drop when entering a specific Garrison area — but nothing about AI-controlled disconnected characters.

That leaves the community in a genuinely entertaining state of uncertainty: is this an unannounced quality-of-life feature that somehow slipped out without any communication? A bug that happens to work in players’ favour? Or, as the subreddit increasingly jokes, is World of Warcraft simply haunted?

Until Blizzard addresses it, all theories are equally valid. And given how many players are apparently discovering that their disconnected friends are still pulling their weight in dungeons, the news seems to be landing positively regardless of how it got there.
