Blizzard’s WoW: Forever Beta Changes Snowballed as Dev Team Got More Excited

10 October 2026 · 3 min read · News

When Blizzard first pitched World of Warcraft: Forever internally, the plan was modest: four new dungeons and a level cap of 30. What landed in the beta six weeks later tells a rather different story. Dungeon creature experience has jumped by roughly 20 per cent, the City of Dalaran is open for testing, and every beta tester has been handed 16 Legacy Points to try the new talent system. The list of changes, according to one developer, simply kept snowballing.

The beta, which began on 17 September and runs until 21 October ahead of a 4 November launch, has already received three rounds of development notes. The most recent, posted on 8 October, reads less like a patch and more like a statement of intent from a team that found its stride mid-test.

Our Original Pitch Internally Was Well, Do Four New Dungeons

The scope creep is not accidental. Speaking to PC Gamer, a Blizzard developer described how the project grew organically once the team started testing.

“Our original pitch internally was: well, do four new dungeons. But then we started playing it and the list of changes just snowballed.”

That snowball effect is visible in the October 8 build. Party experience in dungeons has been recalculated so that each player’s own level determines the XP penalty, reverting to Classic Era behaviour rather than penalising the group based on its highest-level member. The change, combined with the 20 per cent kill XP increase, should make dungeon levelling dramatically faster for most players.

The Cooldown Manager now supports every class, racial ability and trinket, with consumable support planned for a later patch. Gamepad controls have been overhauled, with edit mode layouts saved per UI type and raid frame traversal improved. The new City of Dalaran dungeon, long requested by the community, is available for testing from day one of this build.

Rage Mechanics Fixed After Persistent Bugs

Warriors and Druids should notice a tangible improvement in resource generation. Several bugs in the Rage-from-damage calculation have been fixed: the system was incorrectly using the player’s health instead of the creature’s health to determine Rage gained, which meant wearing more Stamina gear actually reduced Rage income. Damage absorbs were also being counted when they should have been ignored.

Additional Rage generated from landing Critical Strikes has been increased to 100 per cent, up from 75 per cent. A separate fix addresses Dual Wield Specialisation, which was incorrectly granting its Hit Chance bonus to both weapons instead of one.

Key detail: All 16 Legacy Points have been granted to every beta tester, and Legacy talent respecs now start at just 1 silver during the beta. Both rules are beta-only and will not carry into the live launch on 4 November.

Three Builds, Three Waves of Change

The beta’s trajectory so far shows a clear pattern of escalation. The September 24 build introduced 1-silver talent respecs, campfire rules, and adjustments to Wizard Oils and wand scaling. The October 1 update raised the level cap to 30, added three more dungeons, cut extra dungeon quest experience by 50 per cent and increased the honour cap from 15,000 to 25,000.

Now the October 8 build has added Dalaran, reworked dungeon XP and fixed the Rage system. Each update has been larger than the last, and the development notes suggest the team is far from finished before the beta closes on 21 October.

What This Means for Launch

Blizzard has been careful to note that beta changes do not guarantee launch behaviour. Class abilities and talents may continue shifting throughout the testing period, and some rules, such as the 1-silver respec, are explicitly temporary. But the pace of change suggests a team that has found its footing and is pushing hard before the 4 November launch window.

For players who purchased eligible bundles to secure beta access, the message is clear: the game you test today will not be the game that ships next month. Whether that excites or alarms you probably depends on how much you trust Blizzard’s track record with beta-to-launch transitions.

The beta runs until 21 October. World of Warcraft: Forever launches on 4 November at 3:00 PM PST.
