Named after Dunbar’s most famous son, John Muir Country Park spreads along the coast to the west of the town, taking in Belhaven Bay, dunes, cliffs, woodland and the Tyne estuary.

It is a haven for wildlife and walkers, with more than 400 plant species recorded and a rich birdlife across its beach, saltmarsh and grassland habitats. The nearest access points are around West Barns and Belhaven Beach.

What to Do in the Park

Miles of sandy beach and marked trails make this a favourite for family walks, dog walking, birdwatching and photography. Belhaven Bay is popular with paddleboarders and surfers, and the famous “Bridge to Nowhere” stands at the eastern edge.

Wildlife and Habitats

The mix of dune, saltmarsh, grassland and estuary supports waders, wildfowl and seabirds through the year, plus the wildflowers that give the park its 400-plus plant tally. It is a designated Local Nature Reserve.

Getting There

The most convenient entrances are at West Barns and Belhaven, both a short drive or walk from Dunbar town centre. Parking is available near Belhaven Bay; check tide times before crossing to the bridge.
