One day before a dedicated Kingdom Hearts panel at Disney’s D23 convention, the Walt Disney Company published a corporate blog post confirming the franchise has joined its roster of “billion-dollar” gaming properties. The message is clear: Kingdom Hearts 4 is coming, and Disney wants the financial narrative to match the hype.
The blog post, titled How Games Are Helping Shape Disney’s Next Chapter, reveals that Disney Games Group’s portfolio “spans nine billion-dollar franchises including Kingdom Hearts and Marvel Strike Force.” It notes that more than half of those franchises have emerged in the last 12 years.
Nine Billion-Dollar Games Franchises — But Which Ones?
Sean Shoptaw, Disney’s EVP of Global Games and Digital Entertainment, specifically said “nine games have grossed over $1 billion at retail” — then the blog listed Kingdom Hearts as a billion-dollar franchise, which is a slightly different thing. One interpretation is per-game sales; the other is cumulative franchise revenue across all titles.
Given that Kingdom Hearts has been releasing games since 2002 — with the original PS2 release, dozens of spin-offs, remasters, mobile titles, and the ongoing main series — cumulative franchise revenue crossing a billion is not remotely surprising. What’s notable is that Disney felt the need to say it publicly now, at this moment in the franchise’s life.

The seven other franchises weren’t named, though the blog also highlights the growing partnerships with Epic Games’ Fortnite Creative and the Marvel Rivals phenomenon with Gen Z audiences.
Kingdom Hearts 4 Is the Real Story Here
Kingdom Hearts 4 was first announced in 2022, then went quiet for years before resurfacing at a June 2026 Nintendo Direct with actual gameplay footage. Square Enix confirmed the game will launch simultaneously on PC via both Epic Games Store and Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2 — a broad simultaneous release that’s new for the franchise.
On Switch 2: Three Kingdom Hearts collections — HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind — are arriving for Nintendo Switch 2 in October 2026, giving new players a way to catch up before KH4.
The D23 panel — titled “Deep Dive Into Kingdom Hearts” — was scheduled for 15 August at 4:30pm PT, with a livestream available for fans outside the Anaheim Convention Center. The framing is a 25th anniversary celebration (the actual anniversary falls in 2027), but with KH4 clearly in active development, fans expected new details, new worlds, and confirmation of Disney IP inclusions.
What a Billion Dollars Actually Means for the Series
Kingdom Hearts is a genuinely strange success story. The concept — Final Fantasy characters crossed with Disney worlds, tied together by an elaborate metaphysical plot about hearts and darkness — should not have worked as broadly as it did. Yet the franchise has maintained a passionate global following for nearly a quarter century, spawned more than a dozen releases, and generated the kind of revenue Disney now sees fit to trumpet at investor-facing moments.
For Square Enix, the billion-dollar status is validating. For Disney, it’s a signal that the games division is more than peripheral to the company’s entertainment strategy — and that Kingdom Hearts, specifically, remains a franchise worth betting on as KH4 prepares to arrive.
The series has earned its milestone. What remains to be seen is whether Kingdom Hearts 4 can justify the years of waiting and build on it.
