The programmers who built Thief: The Dark Project in the late 1990s left something behind. Not just a landmark stealth game — they left their anxiety, their midnight compromises, and their blunt commentary on their own work, all preserved in the Dark Engine’s source code. Now that Nightdive Studios has cracked open that archive, we know exactly what they were thinking.
Nightdive software engineer Josh Dowell shared the findings while the team works on Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, currently in development for a winter 2026 release. What he discovered offers a rare, candid look at how an influential game actually got made — chaos, handovers, and all.
Dark Engine’s Surprising Connection to Quake
One of Dowell’s more eyebrow-raising discoveries is how closely the Dark Engine resembles Quake under the hood. “Thief’s rendering and the technology that powers the levels is, shockingly, just a clone of Quake,” he says. The way the Dark Engine handles lighting and switches lights on and off mirrors Quake’s approach almost exactly.
The critical difference lies in how the two engines handle visibility. Quake precomputes which areas of a level can be seen from any given point, doing the heavy calculation before the game even launches. The Dark Engine instead runs that same calculation in real time — every doorway becomes a portal, and the engine calculates on the fly what the player can see through each one.
It’s an approach Quake deliberately avoided because it was too slow for 1998 hardware. Somehow, Looking Glass Studios made it work anyway. “I can’t believe they got away with it in ’98, because it’s doing the thing that Quake did that was slow, but it’s doing it in real-time,” Dowell says.
The Comments That Stopped Developers in Their Tracks
Beyond the technical revelations, Dowell found something more immediately entertaining: a trail of comments left by the original programmers, addressed to no one in particular and never meant to be read by outsiders.
“Giant hack! Never replicate this! We must fix this before ’98!” “E3 hack!”
“My favourite part of looking through the Dark Engine codebase has been seeing all of the evil comments left by the Looking Glass programmers, all the Irrational Games programmers,” Dowell says. “They have the wildest things to say about the code.”
The comments are a snapshot of a team working under real pressure — patching things together for demos and deadlines, fully aware the fixes weren’t clean, fully aware they probably weren’t coming back to tidy them up.
Two Teams, One Inherited Mess
The version control repository Nightdive accessed — described by Dowell as “very very out of date” — tells the broader story of how the Dark Engine became what it is. Looking Glass didn’t finish Thief with the team that started it.
“I think most of the team that started working on it ended up moving to different projects and then a whole new team took over for the second half of its development,” Dowell explains. That handover left its mark on the codebase: patches on top of patches, assumptions that no longer held, and a technical foundation that was functional but never quite finished.
What’s included: Thief: The Dark Project Remastered covers all 12 original missions plus the three additional missions from the 1999 Thief Gold release, rebuilt on Nightdive’s KEX Engine.
It’s a pattern that will be familiar to anyone who has worked on a long-running software project: the people who understood why certain decisions were made have long since moved on, leaving only the code itself — and whatever notes the original programmers had the decency to leave behind.
Why It Still Impresses, Decades Later
For all its rough edges, Dowell is clear that the Dark Engine is genuinely remarkable. “In spite of the rushed and hacky nature of its creation, the Dark Engine is capable of incredible things — feats of audio, AI, and lighting that were cutting edge at the time and still able to impress.” There’s nothing else quite like it, he says, even now.
That’s the foundation Nightdive is working with for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, which rebuilds the game on the studio’s KEX Engine — the same technology used for their System Shock remake. The remaster includes all content from the original release and Thief Gold, with updated visuals, modern controller support including a weapon and item wheel, and a mission selector for replaying completed levels. Custom campaign support on PC will also carry across the substantial library of fan-made content built up over the past three decades.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is set for release this winter on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store.
