GTA 6’s 27-Minute Preview Became Netflix’s Most-Watched Film Last Week — Beating Every Feature on the Platform

2 September 2026 · 3 min read · News

No feature film. No Netflix original series. No Hollywood release with a marketing budget. Last week’s most-watched title on Netflix was a 27-minute preview of a video game that won’t be available to play until November.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look drew 31.1 million views between its Thursday afternoon release on August 27 and the end of Netflix’s weekly tracking window on August 30. That placed it at No. 1 on the English-language film chart in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix monitors globally — and it did so after only four days of availability, not a full seven-day period. For a non-interactive promotional video with no storyline and no star names on the poster, it is a striking result.

31.1 Million Views: What the Number Actually Means

Netflix calculates views as total hours watched divided by the title’s runtime — a method it uses consistently across every title on the platform. One household watching the 27-minute special twice counts the same as two households watching it once. By that measure, the GTA 6 Extended Look generated an equivalent of 31.1 million full-runtime watches in four days.

For comparison, The Whisper Man — a Netflix thriller featuring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, and Michelle Monaghan — came second with 23.2 million views. That film runs approximately 114 minutes, more than four times the length of the GTA 6 preview. To rack up equivalent view-hours against a 114-minute feature under Netflix’s counting method, the average viewer would need to watch the GTA 6 preview more than four times. The preview still won comfortably.

There is also the YouTube comparison. As of the time of the original reporting, the Extended Look had accumulated 17 million views on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel alone — separate from the Netflix numbers, and using YouTube’s different counting method where any play registers as a view.

Rockstar Approached Netflix — Not the Other Way Around

Netflix has positioned the premiere as “a first-of-its-kind” release for the platform. What’s less obvious from that framing is the direction of the initial conversation. Rockstar Games approached Netflix about hosting the Extended Look premiere — Netflix didn’t come knocking. That matters.

Netflix is a company that has spent heavily on gaming integration and interactive content, with mixed results in terms of actually building audiences. Rockstar had a different calculation: a 27-minute showcase of GTA 6’s world, characters, and systems, placed on a global streaming platform available in over 190 countries, would reach audiences who weren’t already following gaming media on YouTube or social channels. The platform’s broad reach was the point, not its prestige.

It worked. The preview hit No. 1 in 87 countries before any competing film or TV title could displace it, and the numbers held through Sunday — the end of Netflix’s reporting window.

Netflix’s counting method: Netflix defines a “view” as total hours viewed for a title divided by its runtime. The GTA 6 preview’s 27-minute runtime meant it needed to generate significant repeat or extended viewing to compete with longer features — which it did.

What It Signals for November 19

Viewing numbers for a preview don’t directly predict sales, and the specific mechanics of Netflix’s view-counting mean 31.1 million isn’t a figure that maps cleanly to 31.1 million interested buyers. But the context still stands out. This was a half-hour video with no interactivity, released six weeks ahead of launch, in a week with competitive major releases from a major streaming platform — and it topped charts across 87 countries.

The full picture of GTA 6’s pre-launch cycle — the Extended Look, previews at Rockstar North, the confirmed 80-hour campaign runtime from co-studio head Rob Nelson, the deep criminal profile system, the relationship meter — suggests a studio confident enough in its product to let it be seen at scale before release. GTA V holds the record for the largest entertainment launch of all time across any medium. Rockstar is making clear that GTA 6, arriving November 19, 2026, is aiming at that same level of event. The Netflix numbers suggest the audience is already there.
