“Both versions use the same attachments and perform identically in-game.” That line from Activision is doing a lot of reassuring work, because what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has just introduced is genuinely odd — a gun skin that only exists for one platform, and one that other players literally cannot see.
Ahead of Modern Warfare 4’s October 23 launch, Activision announced the Inner Circuit M4 weapon blueprint as a digital pre-order bonus. Modern Warfare 4 is one of the year’s biggest gaming releases, arriving across all major platforms simultaneously. Every player who pre-orders the game gets it, regardless of platform. What those players get, however, looks completely different depending on which machine they are playing on.
What the Inner Circuit Blueprint Actually Is
The standard Inner Circuit M4 is a mil-spec weapon with a straightforward tactical appearance. Pre-order on PlayStation 5, PC via Steam or Battle.net, Nintendo Switch 2, or the non-console Xbox PC app — and that’s what you get. Clean, functional, unremarkable.
Pre-order on Xbox Series X|S — the console — and you get something quite different. The Xbox version of the Inner Circuit blueprint is styled after the original Xbox hardware from 2001: translucent green plastic you can see through, with Xbox branding and “Xbox 25” printed on the magazine. It’s a proper 25th anniversary celebration built into the weapon skin itself.

The Part That Makes It Unusual
This is not a typical platform exclusive where one side gets a skin the other cannot unlock. The unusual aspect is what happens in a cross-platform match. When an Xbox Series X player pulls out their translucent green M4, PlayStation 5 or PC players looking at that weapon do not see the anniversary edition — they see the standard mil-spec version instead.
The appearance is rendered platform-side, not universally. An Xbox player gets to admire their retro gaming hardware tribute; everyone else in the same lobby sees the base model. It’s a cosmetic that exists, visually, only for the person carrying it and others on the same platform.
Is There a Competitive Difference?
Activision was quick to address the obvious concern. The Inner Circuit M4 blueprint carries identical attachments and gameplay characteristics on all platforms. The 11.5-inch barrel, the handling tradeoffs, the recoil profile — all the same. The only variable is what the weapon looks like on screen.
That said, the idea of a platform-locked visual has drawn attention across gaming communities. Console exclusives are a normal part of Call of Duty’s marketing history — PlayStation typically receives timed exclusivity on content — but the mechanic of a skin that renders differently per viewer is something new. Console-exclusive skins are nothing new in Call of Duty, but a skin that actively looks different depending on who’s watching is a new mechanic entirely. Whether players find it charming or quietly irritating may depend on which side of the divide they sit.
Xbox’s 25th Anniversary Campaign
The Inner Circuit skin is part of a broader Xbox anniversary push. Microsoft is also offering a £5/$5 credit towards the Xbox version of Modern Warfare 4 as a purchase incentive — a modest but visible effort to drive sales through the Xbox ecosystem specifically.
For a platform navigating significant questions about its future direction, tying Call of Duty — one of gaming’s most-played franchises — to an Xbox-specific visual reward is a straightforward marketing move. Whether it is enough to sway platform decisions for a game available everywhere is another matter entirely. Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23.
