Why free agents matter
Free agents are players without a club at the start of Career Mode, so you can sign them for no transfer fee — you only pay their wages. That makes them perfect for a smaller club, a tight budget, or an early-window depth signing. The best ones combine a decent overall with versatility, so they slot into multiple roles. A few, like David Alaba, carry a potential rating higher than their age would suggest, meaning a motivated veteran in a settled squad can still improve.
