Valheim has eight main biomes, tackled roughly in order: Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands and the new Deep North, added with the 1.0 release. Each biome ramps up the danger and holds the boss, resources and gear you need for the next one.
Here are all Valheim biomes in order, how progression works, and the boss tied to each.
Valheim biomes in order
Every main Valheim biome, its boss and what it’s known for.
| Biome | Boss | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Eikthyr | Your safe starting home and first base |
| Black Forest | The Elder | Copper, tin and burial chamber dungeons |
| Swamp | Bonemass | Iron, poison and sunken crypts |
| Mountains | Moder | Silver, cold, drakes and wolves |
| Plains | Yagluth | Fulings, barley and deadly tar pits |
| Mistlands | The Queen | Thick mist, Dvergr and black metal |
| Ashlands | Fader | Lava, fire enemies and flametal |
| Deep North | Kall Fimbulbringer | Deep snow, Jotun giants and the finale |

How biome progression works
Valheim is built around biome-by-biome progression. You start safe in the Meadows, then push into tougher regions as your gear improves — and each biome gates the next. The Black Forest’s copper and tin give you bronze; the Swamp’s iron unlocks stronger gear for the Mountains, and so on. Every biome also holds a boss whose drop is the key to surviving what comes after. You don’t have to clear them in a strict order, but the difficulty curve strongly rewards following the chain. The 1.0 release capped the journey with the Deep North, the final biome, and its boss Kall Fimbulbringer.
