Valheim Biomes in Order: All 8 Biomes & Their Bosses (2026)

19 October 2026 · 3 min read · Gaming

Valheim has eight main biomes, tackled roughly in order: Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands and the new Deep North, added with the 1.0 release. Each biome ramps up the danger and holds the boss, resources and gear you need for the next one.

Here are all Valheim biomes in order, how progression works, and the boss tied to each.

How biome progression works

Valheim is built around biome-by-biome progression. You start safe in the Meadows, then push into tougher regions as your gear improves — and each biome gates the next. The Black Forest’s copper and tin give you bronze; the Swamp’s iron unlocks stronger gear for the Mountains, and so on. Every biome also holds a boss whose drop is the key to surviving what comes after. You don’t have to clear them in a strict order, but the difficulty curve strongly rewards following the chain. The 1.0 release capped the journey with the Deep North, the final biome, and its boss Kall Fimbulbringer.

Valheim biomes FAQ

How many biomes are in Valheim?
Eight main biomes as of the 1.0 release: Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands and the Deep North. There’s also the Ocean between landmasses.

What order should I do the biomes in?
Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands, then Deep North. Each one gives the gear and boss drop you need for the next.

What is the hardest Valheim biome?
The Mistlands is the big mid-to-late spike thanks to its thick fog and tough enemies, while the Ashlands and Deep North are the toughest endgame regions.

What is the Deep North?
Valheim’s final biome, added in the 1.0 release. It’s a frozen land of deep snow and Jotun giants, home to the final boss Kall Fimbulbringer.

Do I have to follow the biome order?
Not strictly — the world is open. But the difficulty and gear requirements strongly reward following the chain, so most players progress in order.

Valheim reached version 1.0 on 9 September 2026, adding the Deep North as its final biome. Biome details are current as of 1.0 and may be expanded in future updates.
