Former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick Joins Skydance Board as Paramount-WBD Merger Closes

7 October 2026 · 3 min read · News

The $110 billion merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery has officially closed, creating a combined entertainment entity now called Skydance Corporation. And on its newly announced board of directors sits one of the gaming industry’s most consequential — and controversial — figures: Bobby Kotick, founder and former chief executive of Activision.

Kotick, who led Activision for 32 years before stepping down following Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in late 2023, joins the Skydance board as an independent director alongside Laurene Powell Jobs, founder and president of Emerson Collective. Skydance Co-CEO Ynon Kreiz also takes a seat, with David Ellison continuing as chairman and chief executive.

A Board Stacked with Media and Tech Heavyweights

The 13-member Skydance board reads like a roll call of global business leadership. Alongside Kotick and Powell Jobs, it includes Safra Catz, former CEO of Oracle; Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital Partners, which ponied up $4 billion to fund the merger; and Sherry Lansing, the former chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been appointed as a board advisor, acting in a personal capacity.

Ellison praised the appointments in a statement: “Bobby led a global entertainment company through three decades of sustained growth, and he brings real perspective on building enduring franchises and connecting with fans. His record of pairing bold strategic moves with disciplined capital allocation is exactly the experience we need as we bring our businesses together.”

The combined Skydance: Formed from the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, the company is now listed on the NYSE under the ticker SKYD. David Ellison serves as chairman and CEO, with Ynon Kreiz as co-CEO.

What Kotick Brings to the Table

Kotick’s value proposition is straightforward: he built Activision into one of the world’s most successful video game publishers, anchored by franchises like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush (via King). Under his leadership, Activision grew from a struggling publisher into a company worth nearly $69 billion at acquisition.

For a media conglomerate that now owns Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., HBO, CNN, and a vast library of film and television intellectual property, Kotick’s expertise in franchise management and interactive entertainment is directly relevant. The gaming division of the combined company is expected to be a significant growth driver, and Kotick’s experience navigating the intersection of content, technology, and consumer engagement is difficult to replicate.

The Controversy That Follows Him

Kotick’s tenure at Activision was not without serious criticism. In 2021 and 2022, a wave of reports detailed allegations of workplace harassment and a toxic culture at Activision Blizzard, leading to lawsuits, employee walkouts, and regulatory scrutiny. Kotick faced intense personal scrutiny over his knowledge of and response to these allegations, though he ultimately remained in his role through the Microsoft sale.

His appointment to the Skydance board is likely to draw renewed attention to those issues, particularly from employee advocacy groups and investors focused on corporate governance. Skydance has not addressed the potential controversy directly.

What This Means for Gaming

The immediate impact on gaming is unclear. Skydance already operates Skydance Interactive, which has developed VR and mixed-reality experiences. With the combined resources of Paramount and Warner Bros. behind it, the entertainment division could expand significantly — and Kotick’s presence suggests gaming may play a central role in that expansion.

“Bobby brings more than three decades of public-company leadership, having served as CEO of Activision for 32 years and built it into one of the world’s most successful video game companies.” — Skydance press release

For now, the focus is on integrating two massive media companies into one coherent entity. But the addition of a gaming industry veteran to the board signals that interactive entertainment will not be an afterthought in Skydance’s strategy.
