February 2027 was shaping up to be one of the most crowded months in recent gaming memory. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the Fable reboot, Persona 4 Revival and Metro 2039 were all stacked into the same four weeks — and now the month has lost one of its biggest headliners. God of War Laufey, Sony Santa Monica’s PS5 exclusive, has been delayed by three months and will instead launch on 20 May 2027.
The studio announced the slip in a short social media post, confirming the game had moved from its original 16 February date. No dramatic reason was offered. Instead, Santa Monica said it would spend the extra weeks “putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential”.
“Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in the studio.”
Escaping the February pile-up
The delay eases pressure on what had become an almost absurd release calendar. February already featured Fable, Persona 4 Revival, Metro 2039 and Final Fantasy 14: Evercold, with Sony’s own Until Dawn 2 landing shortly beforehand on 28 January. Moving Laufey to May gives Faye’s adventure room to breathe — and gives players with impossibly large backlogs a bit of mercy.
It also reshapes Sony’s year. With MLB The Show traditionally arriving in March, the shift ensures PlayStation still has at least one major first-party release in the spring quarter of 2027. A three-month slip, notably, suggests the project is close to the finish line rather than in trouble — this is polish time, not a rethink.
Key point: God of War Laufey now releases 20 May 2027, exclusively on PS5. Pre-orders remain live on the PlayStation Store.
What happens to the collector’s box?
One loose end: Santa Monica had only just announced a collector’s box designed to coincide with the February launch. Because the box contains merchandise rather than the game itself, it can technically ship on schedule — but whether it does remains unclear. Fans who pre-ordered the premium package are waiting on word about whether it will follow the game to May.
The first God of War without Kratos in the lead
Laufey is a landmark entry for the series: the first game not to star Kratos in the lead role. Players follow Faye — Kratos’ wife, whose death set 2018’s God of War in motion — as she travels through the Everywhen, a version of the afterlife that houses gods and deities from multiple mythologies. The studio has also promised a return to the faster combat style of the original Greek-era games.
Kratos himself still shows up here and there during Faye’s journey, and Santa Monica has said the next Kratos-led game will connect directly to the events of Laufey. In other words, this is not a side story — it is the next chapter of the franchise, just told from the other side of the family.
When will we see more of Laufey?
The studio ended its announcement promising it would “be back to share more updates soon”, and there are two obvious stages ahead. The Game Awards in December would be a natural showcase, while a PlayStation State of Play before the end of the year — or very early 2027 — could deliver the next substantial look at gameplay.
For now, the message from Santa Monica is one of gratitude and patience in equal measure. The wait for Faye’s solo debut is longer than fans hoped, but the studio would rather arrive in May with the game at its fullest potential than force a February finish. Kratos waited eight years between entries once before. Three extra months, by his standards, is a blink.
