RuneScape Reignited: Jagex Unveils Fresh Economy and Clean Slate for December Launch

5 October 2026 · 4 min read · News

Twenty-five years is a long time to accumulate wealth, reputation, and inventory in a single game world. For RuneScape players who have spent decades building their fortunes in Gielinor, the prospect of starting over has always been a non-starter. Now Jagex is offering something different: a way to begin again without losing what you already have.

RuneScape Reignited, announced at RuneFest 2026 and launching on 2 December, is a new permanent character type that comes with its own economy, separate hiscores, and a complete absence of paid progression. It is not a server wipe. It is not a fresh-start world that will eventually merge back into the mainstream. It is, according to Jagex, “RuneScape as it was always meant to be” — a parallel track running alongside the existing Veteran economy.

A Clean Slate Without the Sacrifice

The concept borrows from the Ironman mode that has long been popular among RuneScape’s hardcore community. Reignited characters live in the same worlds as existing players, share access to the same content, and can interact freely in most respects. The critical difference is economic: Reignited characters trade on their own Grand Exchange, compete on their own hiscores, and cannot receive handouts from Veteran accounts.

“If you’ve ever felt lost or left behind in RuneScape, or have been unsure of how to come back or where to begin, there genuinely has never been a better time to jump back in or to experience the full adventure from the start,” Jagex wrote in the accompanying blog post.

For lapsed players, the appeal is obvious. Returning to a 25-year-old MMO can be daunting when your peers have accumulated wealth and gear that took years to earn. Reignited removes that barrier entirely. For existing players, it offers a chance to relive the early game with a community of fellow newcomers, all progressing at a similar pace.

Launch details: RuneScape Reignited arrives on 2 December alongside the Adventure Guide and the next phase of remastered content. All Reignited characters receive free members’ access from 2 to 12 December.

Ten Days of Free Access

Jagex is sweetening the launch with a ten-day window of complimentary members’ access for every Reignited character, running from 2 December through to 12 December. It is a fixed promotional period rather than a rolling trial — join on day one and you get the full ten days; join on day nine and you get one.

The timing is deliberate. December is a period when many players have holiday downtime, and the ten-day window gives the new community a chance to establish itself before membership costs kick in. Reignited is a new character type similar to Ironman and will therefore require its own membership once the free period ends.

Treasure Hunter, the controversial microtransaction system that Jagex removed from RuneScape in January 2026, will have no presence in the Reignited economy. Reignited characters can purchase cosmetic overrides through the marketplace, but Radiant stars — the premium currency introduced earlier this year — will not be available to them. The result is an economy that Jagex describes as integrity-first, with no paid progression of any kind.

What Stays and What Changes

Existing characters are being rebranded as Veterans. Their progress, wealth, and hiscores remain entirely untouched. Reignited does not wipe your current account, and characters cannot switch between Veteran and Reignited status once created. Clans and Homesteads can include both types, so friends with different character statuses can still play together.

The separation is economic, not social. Veteran and Reignited characters share the same worlds and can interact freely in most respects. Trading between the two economies is not possible, which Jagex says is necessary to preserve the integrity of each system. Boss instances and certain progress-impacting activities remain segregated as well.

“Reignited is the culmination of everything that we have been building towards this year, and yet it is also the start of a brand new chapter.”

Jagex has stated that Reignited is intended to be permanent, with no predetermined economy merge planned. The door is left open for future options, but for now the two tracks will run in parallel indefinitely.

The Broader RuneFest Picture

Reignited was one of several major announcements at RuneFest 2026. Jagex also revealed a fourth RuneScape MMO built in Unreal Engine, alongside a new animated adaptation produced in partnership with YouTuber Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White. The Adventure Guide and the next phase of remastered content will arrive in the same 2 December update.

For a game that launched in 2001, the pace of reinvention is remarkable. The Plugin API, long requested by the community, is also launching this month with an early hands-on available ahead of the official release. Between Reignited, RuneScape 4, and the remastering programme, Jagex is clearly betting that there is still significant life in its flagship MMO — and that a fresh start might be exactly what both lapsed and new players are looking for.
