Three awards in a single show. Sega left Gamescom 2026 with a haul that few publishers can match, and the centrepiece of it was Total War: Warhammer 40,000 — Creative Assembly’s galactic strategy title — walking away as Best PC Game of the event.
The Gamescom Awards were announced in Cologne on 28 August, recognising the strongest games showcased across the annual trade fair. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 beat out a competitive field that included Gamescom 2026 favourite Crimson Desert from Pearl Abyss, along with Alien: Isolation 2 and Metro 2039.
Sega’s Three-Trophy Night
The publisher’s sweep was thorough. In addition to Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer 40,000 taking Best PC Game, Sega’s Alien: Isolation 2 — developed by Creative Assembly’s separate studio team — claimed Best Audio. The company then rounded out the evening with Best Lineup, which judges a publisher’s overall presentation at Gamescom rather than any single title.
That’s two separate Creative Assembly games on the trophy shelf and a third award for the publisher’s collective output — a strong statement about the studio’s standing heading into the back half of 2026.
Full Gamescom Award winners: Best PC Game: Total War: Warhammer 40,000 (Creative Assembly/Sega) · Best Xbox Game: Forza Horizon 6 · Best PlayStation Game: Onimusha: Way of the Sword (Capcom) · Best Switch 2 Game: Rayman Legends Retold (Ubisoft) · Best Mobile Game: Where Winds Meet · Best Audio: Alien: Isolation 2 · Most Epic: Tides of Annihilation.
CDPR Also Takes Three Awards
CD Projekt Red matched Sega’s tally, with The Witcher-related entries accounting for three trophies of their own. The Polish studio’s presence at Gamescom was significant, and the awards reflect a strong showing for a company that spent much of 2023 and 2024 rebuilding its reputation following Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled launch.
Pearl Abyss, meanwhile, was nominated in both the Best PC Game and Most Epic categories for Crimson Desert but left without a win. Most Epic went to Tides of Annihilation instead.
What Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Brings to the Series
Creative Assembly’s decision to take the long-running Total War franchise into the Warhammer 40,000 universe marks a significant step. The original Warhammer Fantasy trilogy — released between 2016 and 2019 — became the best-selling entries in the Total War catalogue, demonstrating that Games Workshop’s IP and Creative Assembly’s strategy formula were exceptionally well-matched.
Warhammer 40,000 extends that into the far future: space marines, Chaos forces, Orks, and the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, all rendered through Total War’s real-time battle and grand strategy campaign systems. Attendees at Gamescom 2026 had access to a playable demo, and the response was warm enough to edge out some of the year’s other big PC releases for the top prize.
A Strong Showing for PC Strategy
The win continues a strong period for the strategy genre on PC. Turn-based and real-time strategy titles have consistently performed well with critics and at awards shows in 2025 and 2026, and Creative Assembly’s track record with the Warhammer licence gives Total War: Warhammer 40,000 a solid foundation to build on. No release date has been confirmed yet, but the Gamescom award will do its reputation no harm as the studio heads toward launch.
The original Warhammer Fantasy trilogy sold over 20 million copies combined, making it the most commercially successful sub-series in Total War history. The shift to the 40,000 setting — with its distinctive Space Marines, Chaos Legions, Tyranid swarms, and Eldar factions — opens the franchise to an even broader audience of tabletop hobbyists and sci-fi strategy fans who might have found the fantasy setting less familiar.
For Creative Assembly and Sega, the Gamescom win arrives at a meaningful moment. It signals that the studio’s ambitious move into the grimdark far future is landing well with players, and provides strong momentum heading into what will be one of the most competitive release windows of the year.
