Inverness is a lively city, ideal for kick-starting or concluding your NC500 road trip, or both if you have time.
One of my favourite things to do here is a pub crawl between live gig venues like Hootenanny, Gellions and The Highlander — just be cautious of the drink-driving laws if you are behind the wheel the next morning.

Location & Getting There
Inverness sits at the head of the Moray Firth where the A9 from Perth and Edinburgh meets the Highlands, making it the natural bookend for the NC500 loop. The route officially begins and ends at Inverness Castle. The city has its own airport at Dalcross and is the northern terminus of the main rail line, with the scenic Far North Line running on towards Thurso.
What to See & Do
Inverness has landmarks close by worth visiting to understand the history of the area and wider Scotland — Culloden Battlefield, where the 1746 Jacobite rising ended, and the prehistoric Clava Cairns are both a short drive east. In the city itself, the museum and art gallery, the cathedral on the river, and an evening of live folk music in the pubs round out a stop nicely.

Where It Fits on the Route
Most people treat Inverness as mile zero. This guide runs clockwise — west to Applecross first, then up the coast and back down the east side — but there is no right or wrong direction. Whichever way you turn out of the city, reserve your first night’s bed before you leave.
