Thurso is the largest town along the northern coast of the North Coast 500 and, for a place this far north, it is surprisingly lively. It has a proper high street, a sandy bay, and a reputation among surfers as one of the best cold-water surf spots in Europe.

It is also a useful hub. The nearby harbour at Scrabster runs ferries to Orkney, the Far North Line brings the train all the way up from Inverness, and the Castle of Mey, the late Queen Mother’s Highland home, is a short drive to the east.

Surf, town and beach

Thurso is best known in surfing circles for the powerful reef break known as Thurso East, which draws experienced surfers from around the world, especially in the colder months. Even if you never touch a board, the bay and the ruins of Thurso Castle above it make for a bracing walk, and the town has enough shops, cafes and places to stay to make it a comfortable overnight.

Castle of Mey and Scrabster

A short drive east of Thurso, the Castle of Mey was bought and restored by the Queen Mother and is open to visitors in season, with gardens overlooking the Pentland Firth. In the other direction, the harbour at Scrabster is the mainland gateway to Orkney, with car ferries crossing to Stromness in around ninety minutes.

A base for the far north

Because it has the best range of services on the north coast, Thurso works well as a base for exploring the top of the mainland, whether you are heading east to John o’ Groats or planning a side trip across to Orkney.
