Not technically on Skye but located less than 10 miles from the Skye Bridge, Eilean Donan (Island of Donan) Castle is a striking 13th-century castle situated on the meeting point of three sea lochs, Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh.

Today, the structure we are familiar with follows the original ground plan and was completed in 1932.

During a tour, visitors can learn more about the castleโ€™s eventful history, which features Vikings and the Jacobites.

If arriving to Skye by ferry, youโ€™ll dock in Armadale in the south of the island.

If you want to visit Eilean Donan Castle, plan to leave via the Skye Bridge.

Getting There & Parking

Eilean Donan stands beside the A87 at Dornie, about 15 minutes before the Skye Bridge, so almost everyone driving to Skye passes it. There is a free car park across the road from the castle, with a cafe and gift shop attached.

From the car park a short path leads down to the arched stone footbridge that links the castle to the shore. The walk from car to bridge takes only a couple of minutes, which makes it an easy leg-stretch even if you do not go inside.

What to See

The castle you see today is largely a 20th-century reconstruction, rebuilt by the Macrae family after the original was destroyed in a Jacobite naval bombardment in 1719. Inside, the rooms are furnished to show clan life, with the Billeting Room and the kitchens among the highlights.

Most visitors come for the exterior. The classic shot is from the shoreline to the right of the bridge, where all three lochs (Duich, Long and Alsh) and the mountains behind line up behind the castle.
