Every island needs a lighthouse, and Skyeโs is at Neist Point, on the islandโs most westerly tip.
Landscape photographers especially like this view at sunset!
The steep path takes around 25 minutes to walk and follows the same route back; unfortunately, you canโt see the lighthouse from the road.
Getting There & Parking
Neist Point is the most westerly tip of Skye, reached by a long single-track road out past Dunvegan and Glendale. There is a car park at the end, which is small and busy at sunset – the most popular time to be here.
From the car park a concrete path drops steeply toward the lighthouse. It is a stiff climb back up, so factor that in, especially in the dark after a sunset visit.
What to See
The headland ends in tall sea cliffs and a working lighthouse perched on the point, with the Outer Hebrides often visible across the Minch. Whales, dolphins and basking sharks are sometimes spotted from the cliffs in summer.
Neist Point is one of the best sunset spots in Scotland, when the low light catches the cliffs and the lighthouse. Many people come purely for that golden hour.
Best Time & Tips
- Sunset is the classic time, but bring a torch for the walk back up
- The path is steep and the cliffs are unfenced, so take real care near edges
- It is very exposed to wind – dress warmly even in summer
- Allow for the long single-track drive each way
- Arrive early for a sunset space, as the car park is small
