A jailbroken PlayStation 5 can now emulate PlayStation 2 games using your own physical discs, thanks to a new update for the PS5SX2 emulator. The version 2.01 release, created by developer Swordpdf, allows users to insert a PS2 DVD into the console’s disc tray, dump it directly to the SSD, and play it — no downloaded ROMs required.
The development arrives at an awkward moment for Sony, following recent jailbreaking advancements that work on PS5 systems running firmware as recent as July 2026. While the homebrew community celebrates the milestone, the timing underscores the ongoing tension between console security and user freedom.
How PS5SX2 Works
PS5SX2 is a fork of the long-established PCSX2 emulator, adapted specifically for jailbroken PS5 hardware. The project’s lead developer, Swordpdf, announced the disc-reading capability on X and detailed the technical process in a GitHub release. Once a PS2 disc is inserted, the emulator detects it, dumps the data if it has not already been copied, and launches the game.
The process eliminates the need to source game images from unofficial websites. Players who own physical PS2 DVDs can now create digital copies directly on their jailbroken console, preserving their discs while enjoying the convenience of SSD-based loading.
AI-assisted development: Swordpdf has been transparent about using AI in the coding process. Claude, Anthropic’s language model, is listed as one of three contributors on the PS5SX2 GitHub repository.
The project represents a notable example of AI-assisted emulator development. Swordpdf has been open about using Claude as a coding tool, and the AI is credited alongside human contributors on the repository. Whether this model becomes more common in homebrew development remains to be seen, but PS5SX2 demonstrates that AI can meaningfully accelerate complex low-level programming work.
The CD Limitation
There is a significant hardware constraint. The PlayStation 5’s optical drive can read Blu-Rays and DVDs, but it cannot read CDs. This means any PS2 game distributed on CD — typically the blue-tinted discs from the earliest years of the PS2’s lifecycle — cannot be dumped using this method. The same limitation applies to all original PlayStation discs, which were also CD-based.
In practical terms, this excludes a substantial portion of the PS2 library. Many of the most iconic early PS2 titles, including the original Gran Turismo, Tekken Tag Tournament, and numerous launch-window games, were released on CD. Owners of these discs cannot use PS5SX2’s disc-dumping feature and must continue sourcing game images through other means.
“Put a PS2 disc in the drive, dumps it if not already dumped and launches the game.” — PS5SX2 v2.01 release notes
For DVD-based PS2 games, however, the system works seamlessly. The majority of the PS2’s library shifted to DVD format after the console’s first couple of years, meaning a large selection of titles is compatible with the new disc-reading feature.
PS3 Emulation Already in Development
Swordpdf has not stopped at PS2. A follow-up announcement revealed that PS5SX3, an emulator for PlayStation 3 games, is already in development. The goal is to allow jailbroken PS5 consoles to dump PS3 discs directly, continuing the pattern of using Sony’s own hardware to play legacy software.
PS3 emulation presents considerably greater technical challenges than PS2. The Cell processor’s unusual architecture made it difficult to emulate even on powerful PCs for years. Achieving playable PS3 emulation on PS5 hardware, which uses a more conventional x86 design, will require sophisticated translation work. If successful, it would represent a significant milestone in console preservation.
What This Means for Preservation
The homebrew emulation scene has long played a crucial role in game preservation. Official re-releases from platform holders rarely cover the full breadth of a console’s library, leaving many titles inaccessible through legitimate channels. Emulators like PCSX2, Dolphin, and PPSSPP have ensured that older games remain playable on modern hardware, often with improvements such as higher resolutions and faster loading times.
PS5SX2 extends this preservation work to Sony’s current-generation hardware. For players who have maintained physical PS2 collections, the ability to create digital backups on the same console form factor offers a compelling convenience. The disc-dumping workflow also sidesteps the legal grey area of downloading ROMs from unofficial sources, though running jailbroken firmware on a PS5 remains outside Sony’s terms of service.
Sony has historically taken a hard line against jailbreaking and unauthorised software modifications. The company’s response to this development will likely follow familiar patterns, though the growing sophistication of jailbreak tools and the positive public perception of emulation make enforcement increasingly difficult.
For now, PS5SX2 version 2.01 is available on GitHub for anyone running a jailbroken PS5. The project continues to evolve, with PS3 emulation on the horizon and the homebrew community actively refining the software. Whether Sony chooses to respond with firmware patches, legal action, or a more conciliatory approach remains to be seen.
