I personally find Stockbridge the city’s most romantic area.
It still retains the city’s New Town historic charm with a hint of hip in its coffee culture and a touch of nature with the Water of Leith running through it.

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
No visit to Stockbridge is complete without wandering through the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (EH3 5LR). This 70-acre oasis sits right on Stockbridge’s doorstep and is one of Edinburgh’s best free attractions. Entry costs nothing – just walk in through the East Gate on Inverleith Row or the West Gate on Arboretum Place.
The garden features immaculate flower beds, a rock garden, ponds, sculptures and panoramic views of the city skyline. The iconic Victorian Palm Houses are currently closed for the Edinburgh Biomes restoration project (reopening autumn 2026), but the outdoor grounds are spectacular year-round. Opening hours: 10am–5pm February to October, 10am–4pm November and January, 10am–3.30pm December. Closed 25 December and 1 January.
Inside the garden, Inverleith House hosts free art exhibitions (Tue–Sun, 10am–4.30pm), and the adjacent Inverleith Park (54 acres) offers a pirate ship playground, tennis courts, a boating pond and outdoor gym equipment – all free.
National Galleries Scotland: Modern One & Modern Two
Two world-class art galleries sit on Belford Road (EH4 3DR), a 10-minute walk from Stockbridge centre. Modern One houses an outstanding collection of modern and contemporary art. Modern Two (formerly Dean Gallery) showcases changing exhibitions and the permanent Paolozzi Studio. Both open daily 10am–5pm with free admission. Parking is £5 for up to 4 hours.
Dean Cemetery & Well Court
Tucked behind the galleries, Dean Cemetery (63 Dean Path, EH4 3AT) is a beautifully atmospheric Victorian burial ground open daily (9am–dusk in winter, 9am–5pm in summer). Free entry. The gravestones offer a quiet contrast to the city buzz.
Nearby, Well Court is an arts-and-crafts courtyard built in the 1880s by Sir John Findlay (owner of The Scotsman newspaper) as workers’ housing. The red sandstone tower and clock are among Dean Village’s most photographed features. The courtyard is private residents’ property but viewable from the public footbridge.
How to Get to Stockbridge
Stockbridge is a 15–20 minute downhill walk from Princes Street. Head north via Frederick Street and descend toward the Water of Leith. The climb back is steeper than you’d expect!
By bus: Lothian Buses routes 24 and 29 run from the city centre to Raeburn Place (Stockbridge’s main street). A single fare is £2.40, or use the City DAY ticket (£6.00) or Tap On Tap Off cap (£5.70). There is no tram to Stockbridge.
By car: Metered on-street parking is available on surrounding streets. Stockbridge itself has limited parking – most visitors walk or bus.

You can see the highlights (Circus Lane, Stockbridge Market, St Stephen’s Church, the main shopping street) in about 2 hours. Add the Royal Botanic Garden and Inverleith Park for a half-day. With the walk to Dean Village and the galleries, plan a full day.
Is Stockbridge good for families?
Yes. Inverleith Park has an excellent pirate ship playground, the Royal Botanic Garden has wide paths for buggies, and the Water of Leith Walkway is flat and pushchair-friendly. Dean Village is fascinating for children who enjoy exploring old mills and bridges.
When is the best time to visit Stockbridge?
Sunday mornings during Stockbridge Market (10am–4pm) are the liveliest. Spring (April–May) brings cherry blossoms along Ann Street. Summer has the Neighbourgood Market and outdoor drinking. Autumn offers beautiful colours in the Botanics. The area is atmospheric year-round.
