Stockbridge sits just north of the New Town in Edinburgh, where the river bends past Georgian terraces, delis and independent shops. It feels like a village, yet the main shopping street of the city is only about a kilometre away on foot. If you like good coffee and proper neighbourhood pubs, this is one of the most pleasant places to stay in Edinburgh.
The catch is choice. There are no big chains here, only a handful of small places, so rooms go fast in summer and during the festivals. Is Stockbridge a Good Area to Stay in Edinburgh?
For most visitors to Edinburgh, yes. Here is the honest trade-off before you book a stay.
- For: a calm residential feel, with a high street of cafés, bakeries, charity shops and restaurants on your doorstep.
- For: the riverside walkway runs straight through the area, so the old mills downstream and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are easy strolls.
- For: Stockbridge Market every Sunday, 10am to 4pm, on Saunders Street.
- Against: few bedrooms in total, so availability is tight and prices climb in August.
- Against: the walk back from the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle is uphill then downhill, and it adds up after a long day.

The area has only a handful of places, and all of them are small. That is the charm: you sleep in a period house, not a tower block.
The Raeburn
Address: 112 Raeburn Place, EH4 1HG
The Raeburn was built in 1832 as a Georgian family home and is now a small luxury hotel right on the high street. It has ten bedrooms, a bar, dining rooms, a library, private dining and outdoor terraces. Bedrooms come with Egyptian cotton sheets and Victorian-style bathroom fittings.
This is the pick if you want to stay right in the village and step out of the door into local life. The bar is busy, especially at weekends, so ask for a peaceful bedroom if you sleep lightly. The hotel directory says a few car spaces are available on site, subject to availability, with metered parking on the surrounding streets.
Nira Caledonia
Address: 6 & 10 Gloucester Place, EH3 6EF
Nira Caledonia spreads 26 individually styled bedrooms across two Georgian townhouses where Stockbridge meets the New Town. Many keep their original features, and the hotel is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. It also has its own restaurant, Blackwoods.
Gloucester Place is a short stroll downhill to the shops, and uphill to the city centre. It suits couples looking for a smart stay with a bit of history.
The Inverleith Hotel

A small hotel in a Victorian townhouse beside the Royal Botanic Garden, on the north side of Stockbridge. All rooms are en-suite and breakfast is served in a Victorian dining room. The hotel website lists parking at £3 a day midweek and free at weekends; confirm when booking.
Its official site is basic, so I would book by phone or email and get the details in writing. Inverleith Park, one of the big green spaces of Edinburgh, is next door if you want a morning run.

If you would rather stay in a family-run house, there is one guest house in the heart of the village I can confirm is trading in 2026.
New Town Guest House (adults only)
Address: 22 St Bernard’s Crescent, EH4 1NS
A Georgian townhouse on one of the grandest crescents in the area, with 10 en-suite bedrooms: small doubles, doubles, large doubles and twins, all with smart TVs. Booking.com lists it as adults only. Breakfast is not provided, which is no hardship with the cafés of Raeburn Place two minutes away.
It is good value for this part of Edinburgh, and recent guest reviews praise the peaceful bedrooms. They are on several floors, so mention it if stairs are a problem.
Apartments and Self Catering
Self catering makes sense for families and longer stays in Edinburgh, and the area has some lovely flats.
10 Clarendon Crescent

Five self-contained apartments in a Georgian building, with full-height windows over the local gardens, high-speed wifi and their own heating controls. The owners offer flexible rates, whether you stay a weekend or a month. It sits a few minutes on foot from the shops of the city.

The Riverside Hideaway by Calton Living

A one-bedroom flat for two over two floors, right on the Water of Leith, the river of Edinburgh. The snug bedroom is on the lower level overlooking the river, and the bright living room upstairs has large windows facing the water. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out by 11:00. Stockbridge Market is just around the corner.

There are no budget beds in the village itself, but this hostel is a pleasant stroll away along the river.

A lively hostel inside a converted church on the western edge of the city. It has dorms and private double or twin rooms. Its terms say there are no under-14s, and 14 to 17-year-olds must share a private room with an adult; dorms are for over-18s only.
It is the cheapest bed close to the village, and the riverside path past the old mills is one of the nicest in the city.

A luxury hotel made of seven interconnected Georgian townhouses, with a glass-roofed central courtyard. It has an indoor 12-metre pool, sauna, steam room and spa. From here it is a downhill stroll to the river and a few minutes to the heart of Edinburgh.

A stylish hotel on a leafy crescent, built in 1872 and refurbished in recent years. Many bedrooms look over Drumsheugh Gardens or towards the Firth of Forth, and the No.35 restaurant serves European food with a Scottish twist. The river path is just around the corner.
Airbnbs in Stockbridge
Much of the housing in this part of Edinburgh is Georgian or Victorian tenement flats, and there are plenty of holiday lets. You can search Airbnb listings for the area and filter for an entire apartment or house.
Every short-term let in Scotland now needs a licence from the local council. You can check whether a property is licensed on the City of Edinburgh Council public register before you pay. Most flats are up communal stairs with no lift, so read the listing carefully if you have heavy bags.

Getting to and Around Stockbridge
From Edinburgh Airport, the tram leaves from outside the terminal and runs into the city centre. Get off at the western end of Princes Street, then walk or take a short taxi ride down the hill. From Edinburgh Waverley station, the walk is roughly 25 minutes, mostly downhill through Georgian streets.
Lothian buses link the area with the city centre; check the Lothian Buses app for the latest routes. Parking in Edinburgh is mostly metered on-street, so if you are coming into Edinburgh by car from out of town, ask where to park before your stay.
Tips for Booking Accommodation in Stockbridge
- Book early for August, when the festivals fill the city and beds in town sell out, and for Hogmanay.
- Budget for the new levy: since 24 July 2026, Edinburgh adds 5% to the cost of your room for the first five nights of a stay. It applies to hotels, guest houses and holiday lets.
- Plan a Sunday here for the market, then follow the river path upstream.
- Ask about stairs: many Georgian buildings have no lift.
